Thanks, I think I'm going to have to break out the chemicals. The damn thing is STILL alive. I can't stand the thought of crushing him or carrying him outside (unless he's dead or sedated). We've been having to shower in the other bathroom and I can't stand it anymore. Plus, I feel really guilty that the poor thing is probably suffering.

One interesting thing is, he seems to be attracting other bugs. Why they'd walk to their death, I have no idea. I found some kind of unknown crawling around and a cricket. The cricket got too close to the cup and got sucked under somehow. Now, the spider has dinner. It's like a damn science project now.

It's sad that I'm so scared of spiders I'd rather contain him than risk him touching me or anything near me. My husband is actually worse than I am. He is too scared to go in the same room with a spider, much less kill/remove/contain it.

On the other hand, I have an irrational fear of ALL bugs. That includes butterflies and ladybugs (lol). Of course, spiders definitely raise the panic level more than anything else.

By the way, I have windex, bleach, vinegar, baking soda, pure essential oils (lemon, tea tree, lavender), peppermint castile soap, etc. What do you guys think is most effective for a quick and less painful death (other than a shoe)? I'm guessing windex or bleach but I hate using harsh chemicals so if there is another way I would be very interested to hear it. If not, I WILL be busting out the bleach/windex TODAY.

Please don't use the windex and bleach at the same time- using ammonia and bleach together could take you out too...of the things you listed, my guess would be bleach. I wish the DE would work. I don't think that the baking soda, soap or essential oils would have much effect. ( i don't like depleting the predator population- but with poisonous spiders in the house all bets are off, so I'd probably go with bug spray, followed by a shoe)

do you have a neighbor that would rescue it/you?

Thanks, I know about the mixing bleach and ammonia thing. I just wondered which would be more fatal. =D

I'd read on other sites that some of the other things I mentioned would kill them but I'm not sure I believe it.

No, I don't know anyone around here. I wish I had the guts to take him outside but they seriously send me into a frenzy.

Spiders in jars: Put a lit match under the cup. It will suffocate him quickly and the fire goes out on its own. If floor is wood, slip tinfoil under it first.

DE: Well, did any of you ever look into what it REALLY is? LOL..... It isnt "earth" or dirt at all. I loved that stuff when I was on the farm. It was not very effective for internal use, but but hairy bugs were gonners, as well as bugs with shells. Got rid of all the nasty critters found on the chickens and helped control the fleas. Its much cheaper to buy it in bulk, then in small amounts.

Yeah, I did a lot of research before I bought it. It's the fossilized remains of water plants. Supposedly, the powder is microscopically very sharp and pierces the exoskeletons of insects/spiders/slugs causing them to become dehydrated and die. It's attracted to moisture and is picked up easily as they walk over it.

I know it's not supposed to work immediately on contact since the creature will be dying from dehydration but my little spider friend surely should have died after 6 days. I completely coated the poor little guy twice. He was basically swimming in it.

People say it is good for internal parasites and many other things. There are many health claims about consuming food grade DE. I have not tried this and I probably won't.

I mustered up some courage and went in there with a fly swat to put him out of his misery. Regardless of putting all my strength behind the first swat I had to hit the monster twice to end it. He was tough stuff. I hope I never see another of his kind again.

I used to use it (diatomaceous earth) in another state to kill slugs in the garden when I was having an invasion and nothing else worked. For slugs, it is essentially like crawling across broken glass...... then they die. This I wonder about us or our pets ingesting it - not sure. I do know that there isn't much of it around; it's a limited resource. It does improve the soil, though, especially in areas with clay soils.

Weeeellll........mostly outside. They eat all the spiders around the foundation and my garden slugs and then I don't have spiders crawl in the house. However I did put some eggs in the incubator (my first time hatching eggs) so in a week I will have chicks in the house....for a few weeks any way. They are really very sweet animals and really soothing to hang out with. When I feel stressed I go outside and vape and pet the chickens and I feel better right away. It's weird.
