Personally I haven't heard great things about the xtar's, but I've never owned one. The expensive Pila's have been the market standard for quite a while, but in researching the flashlight forums I found that the general consensus was that the Nitecore v2 Intellichargers were just as good & for almost half the price. That's how I ended up with an i4 & have been very happy with it.

Sorry I don't have more to add about the Xtar's.

I have an older Xtar 4 channel charger. I've been using it for over a year with no issues. I expect newer models (which the xtar vp1 is) to be an improvement. I would recommend a Pila first, followed by the Nitecore Intellichargers, then the Xtars.

When it comes to batteries and chargers, vapers are schoolkids next to the RC racing and flashlight enthusiasts, so here is a link to a review on your charger done over on the candlepower forums.

I have a vp1, PBussardo said it's what he uses on tasteyourjuice.com so it's what I got. after reading about it, getting it and using it I couldn't be happier. With the protections built in (overheat protection being my favorite) and the clear digital readout I couldn't be happier or feel better about my purchase.

IMO you did good.

also from what i've read, you're supposed to be able to take batteries that have discharged too far for other chargers to give them a charge and use them in the vp1 and it will charge them like they're new.. Haven't tested that myself..

The Xtar VP1 and a Pila are the two best chargers out there right now. Performance wise the CC/CV charging curves and termination of a VP1 are identical to Pila, but for the same price of less you get the digital display on the VP1 and a two year warranty. I've had a VP1 for about 8 months now - great charger.

I would buy that, if it wasn't for the fact that these kind of reports about Nitecore chargers keep showing up on ECF, but you don't see catastrophic failure reports about Xtar and Pila chargers:

The problem with cheap chargers is they get really expensive when you have to keep replacing them, along with batteries they destroy in the process of the charger crapping out.

I have an xstar vp1 myself and out of all the chargers I have right now it is the best. Theres only one thing that I would change, I wish it took 26650s but thats not a big deal. I also have a nitecore i2 and an efest luc v4. Out of them all the vp1 is still the best. Between the xstar vp1 and the pila, they are the most highly recommended chargers. Where my nitecore takes forever to charge 2 30 amp sonys and the vp1 barely takes and hour if that. Plus some sites dont even recommend using certain chargers (nitecore) for 30 amp or higher rated batteries. Yes they'll obviously charge them but you cant change the output of the charger like you can with the vp1 or other chargers. I think it has a set output of 0.5 amps? I think, not sure id have to look. And no im not bashing nitecore before I get jumped on for this, it was my first charger, but if I had the chance to do it over, no I would of went with another charger.

Buy the PILA.
I have had mine for 3 1/2 years, charging perfection... Batteries come off @ 4.2 volts every time... and yes it will even charge a 26650...:) 1 at a time of course..

Good reading, but a few of those were user error, like the one that was posted twice where the guy put a battery in backwards & fried the bay. One or two of them were just bad batteries, the cord problem seems to happen quite a bit from Amazon purchases (in fact someone asked me about one last night & it was pictured with a Euro cord), and as Cpt.Spalding pointed out, there are going to be bad units with anything electronic. The vape community makes up a tiny portion of their sales & quite frankly we're neophytes in the battery world when you look at the flashlight enthusiasts. I did most of my reading on their forums before I purchased mine & the tests/reviews I found were generally favorable.

I wasn't knocking the Xtar, but I suppose I could've worded it better. I didn't want to imply it was bad, only that I had heard some poor things about it (again, anything electronic...) but not as many good things, up until this thread.

I don't have the VP1, but I do have the Xtar SP1. I absolutely love that thing!!!

It's only a single bay charger.

Performance wise:
-It charges my 18500 batteries super fast because you can charge AW batteries at 2 amps.
-It can charge batteries from --350 up to 26650 with no hassle, manipulation, or spacers need.
-It can charge IFR (LiFePO4), IMR (LiMn), and ICR (LiCoO2) battery Via the manual voltage switch (i.e. if you are charging 3.7 volt AW IMR set it at the 3.6V setting).
-It has a very good charging curve (very similar to the VP1 as well)
-It can charge batteries faster because of the 2 amp setting (if the batteries can take it like AWs can)
-It has the soft start for over discharged batteries
-It cuts off right at 4.2 volts EVERY TIME (for 3.7 volt batteries).
-Comes with the car adapter too

Honestly the SP1 is every bit as good as the VP1 from what I have read. It's been an awesome charger for me but I don't need a 2 bay charger. It is only 20$ +/- 2$ so you could get 2 for the price of one VP1 and be able to charge at 2 Amps and fit up to 26650 batteries.

I love it and reccomend it to anyone who asks for a really good battery charger. Don't let the price fool you, it is awesome! (you do only get 1 bay remember)

Here is a link to someone that knows more about chargers than I do.

i finally got my vp1 today, and so far i love it. as soon as i got it i put a aw18490 battery to charge at the second setting 0.50a and let it do its thing. it has a nice easy to understand blue display of information. it took my dead battery about 2hrs and 30mins to fully charge at 4.2v. it actually charged my battery 10minutes faster than my first startup tenergy 270 charger did. which to me is great. my new vp1 didnt even get warm during the complete process. overall i am glad i chose this charger for my main setup. lets see if it continues to do what i need it to, which is to charge all my provari aw batteries fast and safely. well i hope this helps, ill keep you updated if any changes. thank you all for all your help and support. keep vaping..

I think my next charger will be a VP1. I ought to have a backup charger anyways.

Exactly my thought! Love my SP1 and the charging algorithm is virtually the same as the VP1. So the VP1 must be very good as well and would be perfect for everyday charging or when I need to charge more than 1 battery (not often). Then if I need to charge a 26650 or need an AW battery charged fast (they can be safely charged at 2A) I can always throw it on my SP1 and charge it at 2 amp.

Like you said a back up is a smart idea! :)
