Hello and good day.

a buddy of mine recently ordered some 22 gauge kanthal a1. We had been using 24 gauge on both of our builds, nothing wrong with the 24 just wanted to try out something new.

so we do our traditional coils plus a wrap or two to get the same resistance, rewick as normal and noticed a couple of issues right off the bat.

in atomizer#1 (mine, real tobh 2.5 with slam cap), i am finding that after a normal sized hit, my wick will still sizzle regardless of apparent saturation. (wicking material is rayon btw). As well as the entire atty is retaining a TON of heat, almost scalding hot after a few rips.

in atomizer#2 (friends, clt v2 plus rda) does not suffer from the heat issue, but has the wick sizzling after a hit issue (not as bad as my tobh.)

in atomizer #3( another friend of ours, dark horse rda from steam angel) using same coils/wick as above builds, did not experience either of these issues.

my first thought was well the darkhorse has the craziest airflow out of the the three, however the cltv2 plus has massive airflow as well, so that couldn't be the culprit. i know my tobh gets hot just because of the smaller chamber out of the two, but still had maximum airflow from the top cap. :vapor:

any ideas?

most certainly metered right after building. my typical build is 4/5 wraps netting me .16 with the 24 gauge, these came out to .12 on the 22 gauge.

i've ran .12 builds with the 24g before and heat wasn't a concern. it would appear it almost has to be the added mass of the 22g wire (looks to be more than twice as thick as the 24g) retaining the heat and causing the wicking issues. it's just strange because i KNOW people use 22 gauge, and it seemed when i was running this build that the vapor was a wee bit more .....wet, if you will. That and density are what i'm lacking in my current build with the 24, hence the curiosity in the 22.

Just saw this. I know it's kinda late but I noticed there wasn't an exact answer lol
First off, 22 is thicker than 24 so like Sgt.Rock said it gets less ohm/ft. With that being said the lower gauge wire will take a bit more time to heat up and will produce more heat. It will also take a bit more time to cool down since it's thicker. And that is where your problems are coming from. I own a dark horse myself and use 22g wire and I never have these problems since I have my airflow open all the way. I am not very familiar with the clt v2 but your tobh is getting hot because it doesn't have as much airflow as the dark horse.
I hope this helps.
Vape on!!

Oh and I forgot to mention. I do actually have a bit of sizzling after my hit. It's not actually a bad thing it's just taking a bit of time to cool down.

Chipotle.
22G can sizzle depending on the builds and atomizer, If you want to kill off the sizzle that happens after a hit you need to cool off the coils more before stopping, what I usually do when I have an atomizer that likes to sizzle after a hit is to actually stop firing the mod for the last second of the drag, but continuing to inhale as normal. This will allow the coils to cool down but they will still fire for ~1 second due to the retained heat in the large gauge wire.

Honestly, I can't use 22g or 20g Kanthal... Anything lower than 24g and I start getting hotspots. I have some 22g N80 that I love tho, 6 wrap dual coil (Well, I bend them in half, so quad coil technically... Also spaced, not contact). Comes out to about .16Ω, not much of a heat up or cool down time. Great vapor and flavor :) I got some 317L wire (Gplat without the markup) on the way I'm really excited to try, it's coming from UK tho so it might be a while >.<
