Sucks working jobs that are open every day of the year. They don't even get Christmas off unless they request it early and are one of the lucky ones to get it approved.
With my last job it was by seniority. I rarely had to work those holidays because a couple of my co-workers wanted to work them. Overtime plus a banked holiday. I would rather not work holidays if I don't have to, so it worked out for everyone!

Brings back memories of a Thanksgiving a few years back up in Alaska.
**Tall tale alert**
My best buddy ( a WW2 vet) needed a knee replacement at the VA Hospital in Anchorage..7 hour drive in the dead of Winter! When we got to his late sister's place, no one was home...He said he would just get in like he always does...and that all I had to do was shimmy myself up to the second floor balcony...and that the sliding door was probably unlocked  ...scheesh!!
Then , on the day of the surgery, they wouldn't let his rig on the base ...cracked windshield, bald tires, no muffler..hmmm) so we ended up taking a taxi in.
After he got out of surgery, I settled myself in for the night in the recliner in his hospital room (like I always do with my fam and friends) ..but then graveyard shift came on and becuz i wasn't "family".. the hard core nurse threw me out. ( and no, I couldn't lie )
Course I was a PITA, and didn't have cab fare, so VA picked up the taxi tab and dropped me off back at his sister's place. (This time I had a key!;)) A day or 2 later...and another taxi trip back to the base to pick him up.
I told him I didn't think his sister liked me sleepin in her room...I'd been sleepin with the light on for 2 days:rolleyes: ...and he just LAUGHED!!:lol: I asked if he would swap me rooms and he said "No way. His sister never liked for anybody to sleep in her room." Thanks, John :p
The 2 of us ended up having 2 Hungry Man Turkey Dinners for Thanksgiving!
And it's still one of my best Thanksgivings to date:)
**tall tale backatcha!** :D

It's this kind of holiday that we remember the most. :)

The Thanksgiving that I remember most (and the most fondly) was the year that my brother came to spend Thanksgiving with us. Oh, it was going to be a fantastic spread... no expense was spared! With all the prep work done and the only thing left was cooking the turkey and warming up some dishes I went to bed planning to get up early, pop the turkey in the oven and put all the rest together.

So... the next morning I got up, turned on the oven to preheat it and went about my business. Came back a little later to find the oven was COLD. Turns out we had run out of gas and there was no way to get our tank filled on Thanksgiving Day. Lovely, just lovely. After all the crying and rage was over I started preparing for a meal out... until my brother showed up.

Seemingly amused at my plight (What was wrong with him!?!? This was no time to laugh!!) he calmly walked out to the patio, fired up our grill, wrapped the turkey tight in tin foil and put it on the rack. When he came in he was shaking his head and saying,

"You know, they cooked turkeys way before ovens were ever invented."

And, I want to tell you, that was the best, moistest turkey I've ever had! And the best Thanksgiving memory for me. I still have the wishbone from that turkey all glittered and hanging on my Christmas tree 15 years later. I lost my brother before the next Thanksgiving and every couple of Thanksgivings since I throw the turkey out on the grill and it's like he's right there with me!

When I lived in Atlanta we'd do that slippin and a slidin thing for fun. When it snowed and the parking lots were empty and iced over we had mad fun taking our cars there and letting it rip... movin and a groovin.

God, we were stupid (but young)... lmao

Yeah, my mates work is open every holiday, he usually gets one off the next one on ect. unless someone demands it off, then he covers, about half of the on ones he get to work from home though. Luckily halloween is on saturday so he has that day off, unless someone punks out and he has to cover a night shift. :glare: This will be the first year we get to do trick or treating with the kiddo.

I used to work at an Urgent Care Center where they paid triple time for holidays so we fought over who got to work them. Triple our hourly pay times twelve was a huge chunk of change to take home for one day. Never, ever was there a shortage of holiday workers. Only four holidays counted... Christmas, New Years Day, Easter and Thanksgiving. It was kind of weird that it sucked to be home on the holidays then.

Just came home from the doctor and hubby needs a new hip..?i am bummed out because they are replacing it on the day before thanksgiving and we will eat our turkey at the hospital....yuk. But the good news is he will be out of pain and well on his way to healing for xmas!!!!

Hope everyone is doing great and wishing everyone good luck in the mystery drawing!!!!!
healing prayers for a smooth procedure and a speedy recovery!!
Thanks Marina....he has been in pain for so long that I'm just glad they can do something and we got a good doctor. Our kids all live too far away to come home every holiday and they are all coming for xmas this year so none of them will be home for thanksgiving and we are just hoping he will be feeling much better when they do come home because the house will be too crazy to get much rest then and we enjoy it so much!!!
Sounds like an amazing good time!
I don't do anything for Thanksgiving anymore. It's just me and hubby, but hubby will be working 2pm to 11pm that day. :(
Ugh...hoping Jim can take at least part of the day off!
I wont know until just a couple days before Thanksgiving if hubby will be off so even if he is it will either be just us here or Thanksgiving without him at home. ...I think I lie...if he wont be off/able to come home Ill be here with him...too many years of doing it with out him...it means Ill only be home for a couple weeks before I'm back on the road but hes worth it!
I lost my brother before the next Thanksgiving and every couple of Thanksgivings since I throw the turkey out on the grill and it's like he's right there with me!

My mom husband ALWAYS deep fried whole turkeys for the family and for numerous friends (and to deliver to a few local bars lol) If I ever do a big family Thanksgiving again we'll deep fry the monster sized bird so it wont be a thanksgiving without mom, itll be giving thanks for having had mom!

This made me really really hungry! I haven't had mashed taters with truffle oil but that sounds delicious. I make mine with garlic and usually get the tiny red or yellow potatoes and leave the skins on. Yummy homemade mashed potatoes!
The truffle oil gives it a really nice earthy flavor. And because the oil also smooths out the potatoes I don't need to add any milk. Just potatoes and truffle oil. And I mash it with a fork so it leaves it a little chunky....and of course with skins on as well.
