Not from a cell carrier like ATT. Some VoIP services will issue a number, I'm not sure how the VoIP apps in the App store are set up. I know some of the texting apps cycle phone numbers that are temporarily assigned to the device every time the app is launched or a text is sent. Overall, there isn't a "good" way to make this work as a phone.

Err no your not! Amazon's screen is far better for reading books!!!!

Given that you've never even seen one in person, how can you say that?

I think it looks pretty cool. As with the iPod and the iPhone, the first generation iPad is stripped down. It'll be gen 2 or gen 3 before this thing reaches its potential, but I like where it's going. I'll buy one for sure.

I own a Kindle and have used the Sony e-book as well(don't own that one though). I would say the the Kindle is far superior for reading printed material than any backlit screen. Much easier on the eyes and a much more "book-like" experience. The disadvantage with the Kindle is the inability to do illustrations really well, but for text it is the best.

Having seen and used a Kindle, it's hard to beat the "electronic ink" display of purpose built readers.

And if you've read an ebook on an iphone or ipod touch, it's the same as reading it on a iPad. Backlit display is great for graphics & video but not as good with text as a dedicated reader. For versatility the iPad or a touch wins in a heartbeat though.

I can't wait for the Jailbreak!! I'm hoping someone will allow it to be used with Flight Simulator as an instrument display :D A rather expensive instrument display tho hehe!

--EDIT-- tho maybe when I see the UK prices I will be pleasantly suprised and start liking the device!! I does look cool!

Hmm another crazy idea - it could be an electronic flight bag!
