The prices are on apple.com and the dates were discussed at the keynote. 60 days for the Wi-Fi config and 90 days for the 3G.

What about the hp slate? no info anywhere on those..

I think this is going to be a very very big market for both companies and many more.. even the archos 9 has got ok reviews and that is already out.

Last I knew that 1.8GHz dual core was pure speculation! Of course it will be very nice if it comes true!!

Just thought of another use!! Its a home automation controller thingy that lets you do...home automationey things!! Its also a ham radio operator's best friend for the cramped shack!

Correct but Gizmodo sourced it and they are typically correct.

I can't link yet cause I am lazy... remove the space in http

All the specs of it in comparison charts I have seen have had a ? next to the specs of the HP slate so I guess we just have to wait for HP to confirm the details and hopefully :D provide a pre order!!!! If its still 600 US dollars I will buy it but if it was 1000 US dollars I will wait a short while for it :)

I wonder how long we will have to wait for it!!

It will be nice if there was a trap door on the bottom for replacing and upgrading the possible SSD drive and maybe for adding extra RAM !!

I wonder if it has a cooling fan

I think Apple has to leverage its App Store. I dont think you can compare the iPad to a tablet PC necessarily, but it does offer access to millions of applications that are pretty powerful and can do most of what I do day to day. It's a first gen device and I would have liked to see a front facing camera for sure - it's coming...

I could see streaming media, sharing content, and large screen TomTom being a big win. Im sure we are going to see a car/cockpit mount for these things in the near future.

If you think of the iPad more along the lines of a Kindle, or a GPS device you may find this thing is a much better value for your $$. My wife wants one now, I could hold off for a camera and lower cost 3G models.

I think the thing that most people are missing about iPad is that Apple's long term strategy for the device is largely unknown. If you think back to iPod and iPhone, both were considered less than compelling until about 18 months in. In the case of iPod it was the iTunes Music Store that made it a viable product. In the case of iPhone it was the release of the SDK that made it compelling. iPad will be the same way. Apple has more up its sleeve than what we saw at the keynote. A year or so from now we'll see what that is.

Agree... I have played with the new SDK, and all I can say is nice controls/features not seen on other devices. I will be porting my iPhone apps to the iPad and certainly take advantage of the larger screen.

Ipad is awful. I think people will still buy it because of hype but it isn't really useful at all. Basically big iphone without most of Iphones fucntions. Like multi tasking and calling. I mean - why would I spend that money on such primitive device? For the big screen? Hellooo..

You mean iPod Touch. The iPod Classic is still excellent. I've never owned a Touch (I have an iPhone) but I use my Classic all the time. At 260 gig it's the biggest capacity player available and worth every penny.

As with most Apple products, it seems way too overly hyped for what it is. But it'll probably still sell like crazy with the untold millions of marketing dollars behind it.

No flash, needs adapters to connect to anything pretty much, no multitasking, having a central gatekeeper for any software you may want to install - these are things that I could imagine forgiving in a phone, but in something like this I'd want pretty much the same experience as a notebook.

The HP slate looks promising, hopefully it will prove to be a worthy competitor.

My Wife wanted a Kindle... until she saw the iPad.

The iPad may be a "Kindle Killer" and Amazon is not happy about this one. You shouldn't think of the iPad as a Netbook, if that's what you are comparing it to, you dont understand the market.

I dont need an iPad, but if I were to want an eBook reader, the iPad would be my choice!

No flash,

Apple is backing HTML 5, which is probably smart given the fact that Flash is buggy and a massive bandwidth hog in comparison. HTML 5 is likely to replace Flash sooner than Adobe thinks.

needs adapters to connect to anything pretty much,

For one thing, this remains to be seen. We've seen the late prototype, not a shipping unit. However, even if it's true, it won't be a big problem for the iPad. The target market for this device isn't going to be very concerned about not being able to plug a USB hard drive into it without a special cable.

no multitasking,

I'd say that the smart money is on this feature being added in some capacity either before the actual launch of the product or within the first 18 months. Apple has a history of doing that: they leave out a big, key component and then roll it in at a later date. We saw this strategy with iPod and iPhone. It'll happen again with iPad.

having a central gatekeeper for any software you may want to install

I agree with you there, but it's obvious that iPad will be jailbroken immediately. And again, for the target market, this won't matter. The vast majority of iPhone users don't jailbreak and don't have any desire to.

these are things that I could imagine forgiving in a phone, but in something like this I'd want pretty much the same experience as a notebook.

I think that's the mistake a lot of people are making. They're thinking of it as a netbook without a keyboard or a big iPhone. It's neither of those things. As with all Apple products, the long term strategy for the device won't be apparent until a year or 18 months from now. The iPad you see today is just the toe in the water, just like the first generation iPod and the first generation iPhone.

The HP slate looks promising, hopefully it will prove to be a worthy competitor.

Maybe, but it's targeted at a different market. Apple's product is for people who don't want or need a full fledged desktop OS on a device like this.
