Are e-cigs good for outdoor workers?

I'm looking for an e-cig that would work well for my son who works outdoors most of the time. He does a lot of landscaping work and driving around in his truck, and he constantly has a cigarette in his mouth. My guess is that only a cigalike would be a good candidate for this type of use. I've been looking at the SI Volt which gets pretty good reviews and also has a 78mm battery which would maximize time between charges.

I'm just not sure if e-cigs - and particularly the heavier 78mm e-cigs - would work well for his needs. I'd appreciate hearing from any other outdoor workers who might have experience with e-cigs and could offer some advice. Thanks.

I try to take lower-end devices with me when I'm working in situations which may lead to a broken device. I'm not sure I'd feel safe taking a $80+ mod around with me when there's a constant risk of it getting dropped or even ran over (it's happened).

I wouldn't necessarily say that a cig-a-like is the best and only option but I'm leaning more towards a mid-sized battery such as an eGo -C Upgrade - cheap, it lasts a day and it's got a basic VV feature.

I did native habitat restoration for many years. While before I started vaping, I think I can offer some input.
That e-lvt looks nice, but I don't think a clearo on top would stand up to the abuse.

The VTR might be a better choice, it shields the clearo somewhat, and it doesn't protrude as much from the top of the unit.

If I was going back out into the field I wouldn't take anything but a REO with a RM2 as the atomizer, but if neither of you nor your son have experience with rebuilding coils, it might be a tricky place to start. And it's a bit pricey with out knowing if vaping will work for him.

I think some here are missing this when they suggest mods.

Some smokers do indeed have a habit of keeping their cigarette clenched between teeth. I did all the time because it kept my hands free. Now I simply use Joye510 mini's. (They're actually knock-offs without that silly-assed glowing tip). They're cheap and light in the mouth. The downside of course like all small things is the battery life. If he's not going to chain vape then 2 hours+ is realistic. I carry about 4 batteries with me in my pocket and at least one USB charger in the car.

Plenty of small cartomizers/clearomizers to mount on these things as well.

Mech mod with a 2400+ mAh battery and a stainless steel tank.

You can't get much more durable than an all stainless steel mech mod. No electronics to worry about, could hold enough juice and battery power to easily last all day, and easily fits in a pocket. Throw on a Boge XXL sized cartotank with a stainless steel tank and he's all set for great vaping that can last for days.

And you could toss it on the ground, run over it with a tractor, pick it up, and it will still work. At most he could keep a spare battery, spare cart, and a bottle of juice in his truck and his backup is covered.

I didn't miss that part a single bit, but I think the "works outdoors landscaping" outweighs the cigarette hanging in the mouth. He's going to need something that will survive accidents like being dropped in mud, hit with rocks, and possibly even run over with a mower.

Drop a cigalike in the mud and get a bit of muddy water flowing into the carto and automatic battery, and then what? Throw it away and hope he has a spare handy?

You can't get much more fragile than a cigalike. You can't get any more durable than a solid stainless steel mech mod. It's literally just a stainless steel tube to hold your battery in. Throw on an all-stainless steel topper and it would be almost indestructible for normal situations.

From your description, it sounds like your son might be a more than a pack a day smoker. I was, and the cig alikes were never enough to satisfy me. Battery life was way to short, but the biggest issue for me was the quality of vapor. A 1300mah eGo solved the quality problem but I still had to carry around two batteries. A mech with an 18650 provides me with the quality of vape, battery longevity, and ruggedness I need for a physically active job and lifestyle. The size can become an issue, but I keep telling myself, it's not much larger than a pack of smokes.

Like I said, go mech mod.

Same 18650 battery your VV mode uses, but a fraction of the size.

Suggesting a mechanical to someone completely new to vaping / what the OP is asking about isn't helpful and could end up being too frustrating to use or even dangerous.

You left out the part about the learning curve; battery safety, needing a good charger & batteries, if you don't use regular store bought toppers then building / wicking coils, airflow, ohms meter /multimeter for testing resistance etc.
Most vv/vw regulated APV's use unprotected batteries, mechanicals use protected = not the same batteries.

I drive cement truck and am outside all day climbing up and down my truck and bouncing around on my air ride seat so far the best mod I have found is the MVP the thing is a tank. I don't know how many times I have dropped it but it keeps on working. I used to use mechanicals but there is no way to charge the battery on the go easily unlike the MVP where you can plug it into a cell phone charger and are good to go.

If I worked outside I would carry a cheapy (around $12.00) ego c-style 1100 or 1300mah 3.7 volt battery (with good protection.. you have to read the description to see that) with and equally cheap clearo (around $4.00 for a changeable bottom coil 1.8 LR head) and for the sake of length I would make that a mini and just carry a bottle of juice in the truck. If damaged to the point of not working anymore its no big loss.

I have the same problem. I've worked outside on our farm forever. And the thing about working outside was always having a smoke hanging from my mouth- pretty, no. But habit- for sure. It was the only time I could smoke with wild abandon. It's really hard for me to recreate this with my bigger batteries, so I have a couple cheap cigalikes on clearomizers that I can grab in my teeth. If they break- oh well. My husband had suggested for the habit part, to use a cigarette not lit, but that's dumb, and I would in no time grab a lighter and light it. Personally, I'm not interested in mods, as that is just way too technical- all I want is to recreate the smoking part, without actually DOING the smoking part...

.They are....but you have to do a balancing act between what he finds satisfying....
I work outside...I'm an ironworker and have dropped ecigs 3 floors, into concrete as it was being poured, had them run over by forklifts, been caught out in the rain with them....

Letting it dangle from the mouth is going to pretty much necessitate a stick ecig or a cigalike....
My suggestion in that case would probably be something like halo's G6 probably adding on one of their mini tanks....
But battery life will be pretty much crap...so would recommend a PCC to go with it..
And replacement parts are cheap enough...
