I think they were/are over rated.

.

Yeah, right...NOT The Beatles revolutionized music, made sounds on instruments that today can only be duplicated by computers, changed the culture, the language, influenced political movements, dictated fashion, and did it all in the space of 7 years. If you doubt their genius, you have not studied their impact.

OK after listening solely to them for the past few days I change my statement - I don't think they were evil but some of their songs may have been demonically inspired :). Acid and shrooms open your mind to very very strange thoughts and I believe, evil influences (personal experience :)), and it didn't help that they got into Eastern mysticism (which I have also delved into).... I still disagree with much of their attempts to try to unite different beliefs because you can't really do that because all religions are different in their goals and reasons for morality (i.e. Hindus love their Gurus, cows, and fellow caste members to become divinely united with God, Buddhists love so they can achieve pristine awareness and escape material reality, Christians love because Christ commanded it and because it brings us closer to him). Obviously they have similar teachings but they are far different in their goals and theologies. Despite these problems, I think I've found my new favorite band :).... I was listening to them while writing the thread start but couldn't stop listening to them even though I was debating you guys

Have you seen Across the Universe? My daughter is 20, and she loves the Beatles. When the movie came out, she wanted me to go with her. I was not up for it at first because I did not want to hear someone else sing the Beatles. However, I pretty much accept any invitation to do something with my kids and was flattered she wanted to take her old mom, so I went. The movie blew me away.

It captures, in snippets, every single breathtaking moment of the 60's through the music.

LOL, sorry for having my own opinion there folks, didn't realise we all had to bow down and pretend we liked them even if we really don't like their music...probably not a good time to mention that the Rolling Stones are also crap in my opinion.

Maybe you had to be there at the time or something...(which I wasn't)

.

Rolling Stones crap?!?! Have you gone mad girl? Just curious. What type of music do you like?

Look, I'm not dissing the fab four, but I generally like music that is relevant to my generation, I do like some stuff from before my time (The Doors, The Who etc). I've just never enjoyed the Beatles or the Stones, like I said, they aren't relevant to me, and I'm not keen on their music...can you think of any other reason I should be listening to them or expressing fondness for them?

I like generally "indy" music, if you listen to some of the bands that have come out of Liverpool over the last few decades (The La's, Cast, Shack, John Power etc), you will hear Beatles influences, but they are their own bands...and far more relevant and enjoyable to me personallly.

Other grops who I really think are top draw..

Frank Black/The Pixies
Talking Heads
The Jam
British Sea Power
Athlete
Grant Lee Buffalo
Jesus and Mary Chain
Beck
The Smiths
Radiohead
Madness

(I'll have to change my avatar, I'm a guy, just snagged it because folks here seemed to have smoke related avatars)

The Beach Boys were better, never got the credit they deserved because the kids over here were fallen over these guys from overseas. Everytime I hear how great they were back then, I tell my dgt, the Beach Boys were better, music and they could sing and harmonize 2x's better than the Beatles, Just my opinion.

This is the video that made me question the motives of their lyrics - which may or may not have been intentional:

YouTube - Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds

It's such an acid-head's ideal of the world packed into good music that lowers peoples' sense of reality and values.
You think that's trippy, try watching the whole film.

In answer to the original question the Beatles weren't / artn't evil, but Yoko Ono is.

Sorry if you took my comment the wrong way. My point was that you don't have to like their music to respect how they changed the way music was made. What they accomplished in the studio (or more precisely, what their engineers accomplished to meet their demands) has had a far-reaching impact on just about every artist to record in the decades since.

I can understand not getting it. I hated the Beatles until I started to play guitar. There are levels to music. You need to peel the onion I guess.

    Nestran

While I do agree and I do love the Beatles - Let's be honest about there "levels" - Very much of the basic musical structure is based on lifts from classical music and early Jazz and R&B - I do agree that the way they utilized these musical phrases was very creative - but - They were in fact much less original than they are given credit for - As I said earlier that applies to the lyrics as well - Very much of that being borrowed or paraphrased from classical literature and philosopy -

    Still - NOT EVIL - ;)

Not really accurate. The Beatles drew less from classical and Jazz than they did from first wave rock and roll (Berry, Presley, Orbison etc.) The classical influences are minor at best, pushed to the front but not the central focus of their writing style.

And I completely disagree with the assertion that they were less ground breaking or original than they get credit for. They created not just contemporary rock and roll, but the entire modern pop music industry. The pop industrial complex wouldn't exist today without The Beatles.

Music is a very personal thing, no amount of you guys telling me the Beatles are the best will make me like them, and on the flip side, no amount of me stating that they are no good will lessen your enjoyment of their music.

If some of you folks heard the space opera/techno/trance/hardcore stuff that I thrived off in the late 80's/early 90's you would class it as noise...deeply unpleasant annoying noise...you simply had to be there and be part of the culture to appreciate what was going on...I suspect that the same applies to any musical movements/cultures...if you weren't there at the time and up to your neck in it, you probably don't understand what all the fuss was about.

Anyways, each to his own...it's nice that there is so much music out there that everybody has bands they absolutely love listening to.:)

Obviously. Taste is taste. You don't have to like the Beatles. But it's folly to deny their accomplishments. On a purely musical level they broke ground right and left. Their expansion and refinement of the pop landscape is about as close to objective fact as you can get. You don't have to like them, but give credit where credit is due.
