Are there any "box mods" that just use AC power, not batteries?

Box mods are something I would like to get into. I see most of them usually just hold 2 or 3 AA batteries. That's all fine and good, but just wondering if there are any that are just hard-wired, for those who don't necessarily need something portable. Maybe even variable voltage? Plug it in, have a little control box where you can choose your voltage, a juice reservoir, and whatever fitting you want to attach to it. Is there anything out there like this? Or all battery powered?

Never seen such a thing. I'd never use such a thing, but I'd imagine some would.

How would the basic idea be any different than a USB passthrough on an AC to USB wallwart?

The array of containers and micro pumps to make the select-your-flavor-autodrip would take more than a bit of product development, so there may be someone working on it, but I don't know if the market could support such efforts.

I know I'm glad that it isn't on my desk for development. Getting a UL cert on that puppy would be a pain.

The nice thing about the concept is that using a linear regulator would not be an issue as there are no batteries to drain with the wasted power draw. Though I do lean toward PWM regulation, linear voltage rgulators are nice to work with.

What if you were to make it? What part would you perfect first?

If you're wanting an AC Powered device why not get a pass through. The VV option would be out afaik but you can get them 3.7 or 5v versions then power them from a ac adapter, car adapter, usb hub or a computer.

If you're looking for a vv box mod you can go to the modders forum and find many making and selling them or boxmods.net has the Little Sister and Big Brother Box Mods for not much more. They usually hold 2 14500 batteries which will last at least a day, probably much more if you're not a heavy user. Pair that with an extra set and a charger and you're totally covered for not much $$ and no need for a pass through.

As for a juice feeder the Vapemate is available and will work with any device.

Yeah my Inferno already has a passthrough battery. I guess my question came about as I was looking at box mods, but already enjoying my passthrough, I wondered if there was a combination of both. Replacing AA batteries is no problem, or using rechargeables, I just thought there might be a corded unit available for those to plan to only use it at home.

If your passthrough doesn't output 5v you could take it a step up by using that does. One I got recently from Liberty Flights is a lot better than any "factory" pass throughs I've had, and I think it's possible to make these yourself with a little know how. I posted a review of it here. It works very well with a 10W USB wall adapter.

Yeah, the PT's in the modders section are basically what you are asking about. It's a USB cord, atty connector, 3.0 amp button in an enclosure. I've used a small 1xAA box. LED optional.

You need a 2.0 amp power supply.
2 amp AC to USB Adapter, ideal for Passthroughs

Other parts (buttons, connectors) can be had on that site too. As for VV, etc. that's where your own personal design comes in.

There are box mods that use AA & AAA batteries?

Huh.

I've used AA boxes and reworked them for Li-Ion batteries. Still don't know why I'd want to use regular batteries instead. The voltage per cell and current clipping issues seem silly to deal with when you can get Li-Ions so cheap.

I think the OP may be talking about the AAA NiMH mod Hoosier. In case you haven't seen them, the threads are here; http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/battery-mods/105465-now-puck-cheap-parts-easy.html, http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/battery-mods/106016-how-build-puck.html

There seems to be some advantages to using NiMHs over Li-Ions, like the fact that you can run down to the local Wally World or all night pharmacy, pick up a set for under 10 bucks and then charge them in 15 minutes. Granted, so far the form factor is restricted to a double or single box, but there are several people currently working on different ideas.

Here's the one I built and use every day. It's VV.

Ooh interesting. Yeah a 5v passthrough would probably be close enough to what I'm thinking of. I'll have to look into that.

Edit: Hmmm I can find it on the co.uk version of Liberty Flights but it seems like they might not have them for the US.

Oh, uh...

Box mods are something I would like to get into.........

Sorry... The way I took that at first was "modding using boxes was something I'd want to try..." not "I want to buy a box mod with..."

The PT was something you'd have to solder together yourself! Good project for a 1st time mod, though. Once you get into that, you can build em out of anything... careful, it's addictive in it's own right.

Good luck.

5cardstud - that looks like something I want, are there plans somewhere to show how to make it? I'm at my desk all the time(retired) and some times I think my pt is just too hot, got the charger and pt thru from madvaps. I believe that it is 5volt and would like to be able to turn it down a little. Does it also adjust the amps? Anyone selling something like it?

Either/or. I have no problem soldering, but I'm not against buying something assembled either. I see that MadVapes has a 5v passthrough, might just try that. Or Cisco atomizers for my Inferno, which I've heard people say gets pretty darn close to 5V levels of performance. Haven't decided yet.

Nice picture 5card! That's awesome.
