Hi all. Hope y'all have recovered from the chill.
Thanks for the info guys. I've realized that it's not just the batteries that die; as I said, both my Vamo's aren't firing like they should. Since they've given me over a year of sterling service I certainly can't complain. I'm thinking strongly about getting a DS. I'll get in touch with Nick and the Grateful vaper folks.

Howdy Tripsters,
Warm wishes for everyone getting back to the real world this week. After stoking my wood-burning stove/fireplace for the past 19 days, I'm actually tired of it being so damn warm inside. I've also seen far too much TV (2.5 seasons of Game of Thrones) and was looking forward to getting back to some semblance of normality. We had 13" of snow in an 8 hour period followed by 30-40mph winds and 2 days of -5 to -8 degree temperatures. It was as low as -18 wind chill sustained for most of Monday night/ Tuesday morning. While I like snow this shieyt was crazy. I burned about 1.5 face cords(ricks in Indiana) of wood over the Holiday break so I was good to go there as we had 6 stacked on the driveway when this all started. However, I have a very deep understanding at this point what it's like to heat solely with wood. Geo-thermal was not cutting it with ground temps where they were in our sandy/porous soil. The area we live in was once river bottom so no real dense topsoil to maximize the thermal draw. I worked on the cabin fever by snow-blowing the drive every 4-6 hours but the only open asphalt in our area was our driveway. The county road in front of our place was on the back burner for priority so we weren't going anywhere anyway. It is actually very nice to be sitting in my office right now typing this note. I'm waiting for all the traffic to get were their going while I get in a workout and then head home as one of the late shift commuters. It's snowing here again currently but they don't expect more than a couple of inches. This weather is really the climate I grew up in during the 70s that everybody forgot about with the previous 20-year warming trend. I remember folks back in the day referring to Indiana as being in the snow-belt. I remember what real Winter can be like and I do understand how to respect it. Just thankful I didn't have to climb up on the roof to shovel off the loads we got back in those days. An 8/12 pitch roof kind of takes that off the plate. Brew

Reidus,
I had to laugh when I saw this post. We were eating left over RB&R last night ourselves after you're previous post tempted me into pushing my cooks buttons. We did RB&R, Jambalaya and our New Years Pork Tenderloin, Hoppin' John and greens as per the tradition. It's been a little bit of the Southland at our place for over a week.
Coralie, that looks awesome! What is it?
Confession time: I didn't make soup yesterday: it was too damn cold to leave the house, so I raided my freezer for leftovers: I had chicken curry for lunch and RB&R for supper so all was good. Today, however I managed to get to the store, so I'm trying a recipe for Loaded Baked Potato Soup. The most interesting thing: once you've cooked your 1/2 lb of bacon (yep, bacon: pork fat rules!) you then take the skins from where you peeled the potatoes and fry them in the bacon grease! They taste awesome, btw; I've been nibbling on them since I took them out.

Ugh, had to skip bowling tonight to go buy a new water heater  The old one fried itself spectacularly, we're lucky it didn't start a fire. Sprung a small leak and something shorted out in the controller for the heating elements and left a huge black scorch mark on the tank, but somehow didn't trip the circuit breaker. GF's father coming tomorrow while we're at work to install the new one for us

C'mon weekend, I'm ready for ya!

Morning all. Hope your weekend's off to a great start.
Sooner, of course there's meat in RB&R. In the South, we put meat in everything (I recently had a Bacon-Apple Pie, lol). Traditionally ham hock (or leftover ham-bone) was used, but I put in a ham shank instead, along with smoked sausage. Traditionally RB&R was made on Mondays. The women would put it on and do laundry; when the laundry was done, so was supper, lol. Let me know if you want the recipe.

So are we having a sale this weekend?
On another note, I just put dinner on. I've going to a friend's house to watch the game and I promised to bring dinner, lol. I'm breaking a cardinal rule here and trying out a new recipe on other people. It's a French beef stew and I used an entire bottle of my favorite wine, Goats do Roam (I kid you not, lol.) So how bad could it be? :nun:
