tough deep stuff, good luck on figuring where you stand on it... my personal balance is that i would be honest about it and not sneak it... but at the same time not flaunt it... i'm somethign of a closet smoker/ vaper myself... my wife of course knows i love it... and the rest kind of the fam just kinda prefer ignorance... lol, i guess less confrontations that way!

Trapped within my imagination
I agree with porphy, and to barrow Zoyfoyers line... I explain by saying, in referrence to my e-cig - (This is nicotene without death).. " I'm finally doing something about those awful cigs I could never give up.. And "just nic" is far easier to give up then all the addictive chemicals in analogs/cigs.. One step at a time" ( then smile)

I was a smoker for 40years, the last 2 years I've felt terrible smoking. I went through cancer and treatment took 50% of my lungs, I was dx with mild COPD on top of that. My poor family had to watch me continue to smoke while it scared them to death. They are all happy with my vaping, and tell me they are proud of me. I openly vape where ever I won't get in trouble. I'm 54, and want to stay around for awhile. I could quit with Commit, and Chantix for a couple months at a time, but it never lasted. I started vaping 1 month ago tomorrow, and haven't had an analog since. I hope that this works for me long term, and for all of you.

Hey Sheryl, wow it is amazing to think that you are only 54 and can say you smoked for 40 years.
I am 45 and started when I was also around the same age you did. I am mortified to read that you lost half of you lungs to this and have COPD on top of that. I am so happy for you that you found the e cigs and were able to put the analogs down forever.
I found for me that this completely works, I have not desired a tobacco cig in almost three weeks.

Best of luck and God's blessings to you.

I have never been ashamed of smoking or vaping. If you smoke, then people know it. They smell it on you, your clothes, your hair, etc. I never thought anyone was better or worse than anyone else for smoking or not. I say if your gonna do something then do it. If they love you, they love you.
Story.
My mother in law says she quit smoking long, long ago. But the family knows she smokes still. She goes into the bathroom. Stays along time. She comes out and the bathroom is smoky(could cut it with a knife), the room smells like cigarettes mixed with air freshener, she smells like cigs. Even the kids know. We all laugh about it. We're afraid she's going to blow herself up with the lit cig and the air freshener. The kids have even found where she stashes her smokes. Her grandkids, (in their 20's) even steal her smokes when they run out. She can't say anything cause then she would be admitting she still smokes. LOL. I wouldn't think anything bad about her, if she just pulled one out and lit up. I kinda wish she would so she wouldn't have to run and hide out all the time. I don't mind her smoking. I think it also is saying to kids and grand kids, it's alright to lie. The lying is the part I don't like, not the smoking.
Soooo... I say don't be ashamed. Do it or quit.

Personally- I've never been ashamed of smoking or drinking for all that matters. We are a free society and I wasn't put here to be an example to anyone. IMHO.

What I am ashamed of is the fact I can buy cigarettes and alcohol. Yet, the same people who give me the dirty looks and say what they say gladly accept the tax revenue- every year.

Go figure.

It used to be that every time a former smoker felt the need to tell me how they quit, I'd just say "That's a real shame. Want a cigarette?"

Now that I'm vaping, I say "Vaping is like smoking was in the good old days. You should start back up again."

AngelBunny my grandfather also died after being smoke free, or at least we think smoke free time span. He also died of complications due to smoking.

2 mild strokes, 1 artery cleaning, quad by pass zip club entry, 3 massive heart attacks and finally lung cancer. He tried to quit many times until his zipper surgery. The cancer claimed him in 97 after suffering for nearly a year, and he had been smoke free for over a decade.

What is funny is my mother who lives with me now does NOT support my vaping, she still smokes and is trying to justify smoking to me still. I am about to just about ready to force her to vape a cart of some tasty cinnamon roll from dawn, let that change her mind.

One of the cruelist things I have ever witnessed was when I was working in a nursing home, mind you these patients are terminal.. yet the Dr. would not allow them to smoke after 40, 50 and even sometimes 60+ years of smoking, a friggin lifetime. I still feel for the demented ones who had not smoked for years because of the forced quitting. They would roam around and bum cigs from the aides, patients and nurses. I got fired for allowing a few to bum a smoke off of me with a cup of coffee, they were much more happier.
I could not think of a more tormented time in their life, crapping in adult huggies, being forced to quit smoking and no coffee.

Never ever felt ashamed of myself for smoking. If I had, I would have quit. I also do not believe in hiding vaping either since to me hiding makes me. a hypocrite. As for the kids, neither of mine (20 and 16) have ever showed the slightest interest in smoking, nor do they think badly of those who do, including Mom. If I had hidden either smoking or vaping and then later had become ill with a "smoking related disease" then what would I have told them? The message would have been that Mom was a liar
