so i have been vaping for about 3 weeks now. i have smoked since i was about 16 and now i am 24. i have also had asthma for most of my life but never noticed that smoking aggravated it much, but a few days ago i have had troubles breathing. i was wondering if this was because of my lungs adjusting to not actually smoking cigs or if actually vaping irritates them, any thoughts?

Hi SoFluffy, I like your name!

I have been living with asthma for almost 30 years, and smoked cigarettes for almost as long. What you can be sure of is that smoking cigarettes is extremely bad for you - bad for anyone for sure, but the complications of smoking are even worse for asthmatics. Like many smokers I often had a productive cough - e.g. I coughed up thick mucus, which was dark in color. When I would catch a virus it would almost always result in a secondary chest infection, and I would need to go on antibiotics and steroids. I have only been off the cigarettes for a few months, but there is already a big improvement. I no longer have a regular productive cough, and when I caught a virus a couple of months ago it didn't result in secondary infections. It's hard to overstate the change this has made in my quality of life.

Vaping does seem to aggravate my asthma a bit, but not as bad as smoking did. I still use my inhaler 1-2 times a day and sometimes the need occurs right after vaping when I feel tightness in my chest. I can only tell you that for me vaping made it possible to quit and quitting was the best thing I ever did for my health. You may need to experiment with different PG/VG blends to find what works for you. You can also try bringing the vapor into your mouth and exhaling through your nose - minimizing any lung inhalation. Your mouth and nasal passages will absorb the nicotine and it may lessen aggravation you get from taking it deep in your lungs. I found the following article very helpful in learning more about inhalation techniques for vaping:

Inhalation technique with an e-cigarette

Good luck and stay away from those stinkies. You will be glad you did.

I have asthma as well. I've had it for 20 years. I have a little bit of trouble since I've been vaping but it's definitely not as bad as when I was smoking. I use my inhaler usually once a day. Sometimes I'll be vaping and then all of a sudden I feel some tightness in my chest and I'll use it. But I'd rather vape and use my inhaler once day than smoke and use it the maximum amount of times for the day.

Hi 'fluffy

Lot's of good suggestions. Fortunately with vaping, if it is something related to vaping, you have flexible options to tweak things.

First, as pointed out you don't need to lung inhale if that is what you are doing. You get the majority of your nic absorption from the mucus linings in your oral cavity anyway. So you may want to change your vaping technique and avoid lung inhaling.

It could be an adverse or allergic reaction to something in your liquid. Do you know the PG/VG ratio of what you are using? In the most general sense PG can be harsh for some people so the solution could be as simple as lowering the amount of PG in your liquids.

You could simply be in an insult to injury phase, with your lungs still clearing out from smoking and right now they just aren't happy with something new being added on top of that. Again, a possible solution is to avoid the lung inhaling for now.

Do you have seasonal pollen allergies? I do and the last two years have been brutal. I don't have diagnosed asthma, but this is the first time in 10 years I have had to resort to occasional rounds of Asmanex (steroid) therapy to deal with upper respiratory inflammation because my pollen allergies have been so brutal.

Welcome SoFluffy,

It is hard to say without knowing the specifics of your medical condition. Generally speaking, if you had not noticed any irritation or inflammation when you smoked then it may have to do with the juice your vaping. The other possibility is that your lungs are adjusting to being free of the multitude toxins found in standard cigarettes.
You are far better off with vaping than smoking because the e-juice contains only four ingredients. Propylene Glycol, Vegetable Glycerin, Nicotine and flavoring. You want to make sure ALL your juice is made in the U.S.A and that you purchase from reputable vendors that use Pharmaceutical grade ingredients. Be sure to drink plenty of water as the PG/VG dehydrates and reduces saliva intake.Try lowering your nicotine dosage and look into increasing the VG ration of your juice. Also, before you do any of the above I would consult your primary physician and see what he/she tell you. You may have allergies to the e-juice while it's not particularly common with regard to the symptoms your describing it doesn't completely rule it out. How much are you vaping per day (ml's?)

When did you start experiencing shortness of breath within the three week time frame? There could be so many other issues as well, your stress, anxiety, depression and vaping on a full stomach. I have been vaping for years and the only time experienced shortness of breath was when vaping while under stress and psychological distress. High nicotine can also cause this. If you are struggling to breathe and it's not slight but marked I would see a doctor right away and hold off on vaping. It's better to wait and see because your asthma may not go well with the e-juice.
