So after only like 3-4 tank fills im noticing a lot of black gunk on the coil, some of which is dislodging itself and moving up the chimney towards to mouth piece. I took the coil out and removed some of it with a tooth pick. Its not the filler, im almost 100% sure its just buildup from my juice but it seems to be happening very fast. Is this happening to anyone else? I love the tank but i also dont want to be inhaling pieces of buildup either.

Let me guess, it's a dark color and or sweet juice?

I had to give up my ADV flavor because of the caramelization on the coils with my Atlantis and Nautilus. The Atlantis does it more because it's a "hotter" coil. About the only thing you can do is take a Q-tip, wipe out the chimney. Then take most of the cotton off the Q-tip and use it to clean the wire inside the coil. But that flavor will always "gunk" up the coil and shorten it's life.

Or, just change to different flavor that isn't as sweet, and is clear (prior to adding nicotine).

BVC filler material.

Aspire claims to be using cotton with the Atlantis coil.

Sent from my iPhone

They do? That would be good news for a change. Got a link to Aspire's official statement about that? However, when Phil Busardo took his Atlantis coil apart he noted that it was the same material used in BVC coils. At 13:50 min.

On the subject of BVC coils:

Aspire initially claimed that they used ceramic paper, the Swiss lab report (attached) had it identified as fiberglass paper. That was their original statement (from August), now removed from their website.

All the information available to date can be found on the thread linked above and below:)--please click on it and read--if you're interested.

Check this out. It may have been done after Phil's video.

"The page you requested cannot be displayed right now."

I watched. And I was really excited for a while that they finally decided to switch to cotton. However, I've seen no proof of that. All I saw was a guy from Aspire mentioning, in passing, that the wicks are cotton--he didn't take the coil apart and there was nothing in writing suggesting the presence of cotton in those coils... And since the company has a history of lying to us, they lied about the Nautilus tanks (and Atlantis tanks) being made out of stainless steel, while they are in reality the chimneys are made out of chromed brass, and they lied about the fiberglass, I'll remain unconvinced. I need someone to open those coils and show me--or I need an official announcement from Aspire, in writing, that they have changed their wicking material from fiberglass/ceramic/whatever it is to cotton. A lab test report would be helpful also.

In contrast, Kanger indeed makes coils with Japanese organic cotton for their Sub Tank--they even changed the name of those coils from BPDC to OCC (organic cotton coils). It states so clearly on the label, in their specs, and on the box. Also, every reviewer who took those coils apart confirmed that the filler material indeed looks and wicks like Japanese cotton.

Just sayin'...

Can we not jack my thread over the materials used in aspire products? I dont care one bit about the chromed brass chimney, or the ceramic. I enjoy the products and think that it tastes way better then cotton. I'm concerned with stray gunk build up which I'm getting to the conclusion that it's just 25-30 watts gunking juice fast.

This happens with Nautilus BVC too. I've actually asked Aspire about this (Aspire Support: •View topic - Aspire Nautilus Mini. Black ash inside coils?) and they told it's caramelised juice in coils.
But since I've tested it using 70/30 PG/VG 0-nic unflavored juice, I don't think it's because of caramelised coils. I do think it's coming from the filler material.

Try some unflavored 0-nic juice and check the results.

It's happening with 2 different flavors neither are dark colored. One is completely clear. They are sweet flavors though. I'm not so much worried about juice coming up the mouth piece as I am about the blank gunk coming up

Well, I did say "or a sweet juice." That's the nature of heating up juices that are sweetened. They caramelize. Think of taking a bowl of sugar water and boiling off the water to make candy. If you go to long it gets burnt and "gunky". It's the same process going on inside any e-cig equipment but on a mini scale inside.

Again, change out the coil more frequently, or change flavors. That's about your only recourse.

I've had this with Kanger, Aspire, and RDA's (with cotton wicks), with various PG/VG ratios (higher VG will do it by itself because it is somewhat sweetened), with and without nicotine. So it's not the wicking material.

About the only way to stop it is use straight (100%) unflavored PG. Remember this things we use are just miniature fog machines. Real fog machines use PG, but have a temperature sensor to turn itself off when the heating element gets to hot and prevents the PG from burning.

Hey

this happens to my coils also and may be caused by higher viscosity juices such as 70 / 30 vg + . I will try some 50/50 to see if it makes a difference next coil but changing them definitely hasn't made an impact lately ..also as mentioned in my other post I have issue wicking my juice it seems .. or I assume anyways because I get dry un flavoured hits , tastes like a brand new coil so it seems to me the coils not even absorbing liquid and even having trouble when priming . I think maybe the gunk is responsible for this but I could be wrong all I know is it has been a nightmare priming my coil every 2 puffs , it is getting real tiresome .

if anyone has a better remedy than dry burning and picking out gunk all the time ... let me know or if your know what could be behind the dry un flavoured low vapor production vapes ... let me know also :)

Aries,

Here's something to try. Put a new coil in right before going to bed and fill up the tank. Let the unit sit upright overnight before using it. I've started doing this with my Atlantis, and it has made a difference. I use 20/80 (PG/VG) juice btw.

Also, as always, make sure you are using authentic coils. Get them from a reputable shop, or directly from Aspire (I know it's a pain, and shipping costs and all). But the clone/copycat coils really ruin the reputation/name of Aspire.
