Hi all, I'm sorry if this has been brought up before I just don't know what to search for.. I have made a repairable atomizer from 1/4 in jack and I am trying to figure out how to make the coil heat up evenly.. What is happening is when I give it power, the coil heats up in sections and where the nichrome or kanthal connect heat up where I wrap them around the posts.. I don't know what I am doing wrong, if anyone can help me I would appreciate it. I can post pics also if it is needed..

First I tried a piece of ss mesh 400 I oxidized it following some tutorials and now I'm trying some silica wick I got from mcmaster I will post pics a little later I'm at work right now

When i was watching a video tutorial of making a coil for a genesis atomizer it looked like there was a decent sized gap in between the coil and the post.. so I kinda tried to mimick that.. they were about 1-2mm from post.. and I use 36g kanthal and 36g nichrome... Kanthal was giving me a wired smell so i tried nichrome it has a wierd smell too but not as strong could that be the wire getting red hot?

Alright, now I took the pics, I re-did the coil and wick to show you better the other was nasty looking  I am using nichrome 36g its about 2.0 ohm, silica wick. So here they are, this is it before I added fluid, just installed IMAG0324.jpg , this is still before fluid showing the evenness its actually a lot better now, the coil isn't heating up on the posts but the smell is still kinda funky.. IMAG0331.jpg and it puts off verrrry little vapor.. it got this red by holding the button down for like 6 seconds.. IMAG0334.jpg what else could I try? I know maybe a lower gauge wire would help with heating up faster and better vapor... but what about the taste/smell? And any good tips about rolling the coil up?

I would much rather a good tank style repairable atomizer, but it's hard to find and too expensive.. Anyone know of anything close to genesis for like $50? Someone said something to me about a vision stardust and it looks easy to fix up but I also heard bad reviews about them.. and I would like to be able to change it from a wick to SS mesh if I decided that instead of wick.

Thanks for the help everyone!

Yourdog, wick should be cylindrical, so every millimeter of the heating wire should touch the wick. On your picture wick is bent, so some areas of the heating wire are above the wick surface. And they get hot.
Just an example of my heater with SS mesh:

If the wire heats up at the posts, you need nr wire between the coil and posts, or double the wire section form the coil to the post , fold it over and twist it. This will reduce the resistance in that section leaving only the coil to heat up. I recommend cotton wick, untreated and unwaxed 1/0 candle wick works for me. I boil it and dry it and then wrap my coils around it. This is a fat wick with larger and fewer coils as a result but it works for me. The vivinova I use is fully rebuildable and considerably less then $50.

Watch this guy build a coil for an Odysseus, although a bit different than what you're doing it will give you some good ideas. It also shows how the NR wire is used to keep the right parts of the coil hot. If you get a Vivi you'll want to use NR wire so the legs don't get hot and burn the seals giving a bad taste (and fumes?).
