If you're using Kanthal wire... no. Kanthal has an alumina (aluminum oxide) layer that develops to insulate the wire from exterior electrical conductivity.

agreed ... don't worry about touching; the whole Micro Coil phenomenon is about coils wrapped and compressed (touching, not overlapping) to get a better heating surface, and more surface for the juice to vaporize off of.

Some say the more wraps, the more surface for the juice to vaporize off of, and depending on what gauge of wire, you can play with your target resistance.
I.e. thicker wire will reduce the resistance so you can use more of it to get the same resistance that thinner wire would give you.

I also use nichrome wire as well as kanthal.
