What gauge wire should be used in building the protank coil? I had intended on leaving there with a variety of sizes for different uses; but was advised to get 26g kanthal and that it would be good for all my intentions ( sub ohm ranging to 1.2 ohm on rda).

30 gauge

or 32gauge.
28 might be tight for a first try.

I rebuild Protank and Aerotank coils with ease! Takes a little finesse and concentration but it's super simple! The come out SO MUCH BETTER than stock coils! They last longer, produce better flavor and more vapor. I'll never go back to stock coils.

Here's three protank coils I rebuilt...

And a dual coil Aerocoil turned into a single Microcoil...

Here's what a kanger coil looks like all taken apart (Everything is just fitted together, no threads)

Go back to that store and tell the guy he's full of crap and not even close to a professional! :p

That seems to be a problem in my local B&M as well.... They hire people that have no idea what they are talking about. PT2 coils can be rebuilt and I've done many of them myself.... only difference is that I rewick with organic cotton.

The "professional" at the B&M is in dire need of learning stuff about rebuilding Protank coils....
Yes they can be rebuilt... Ill bet thousands of people here have tried it
Rebuilding them is a bit tedious tho.... getting the thing back together is a challenge without patience.

You will need 2mm Silica or cotton for wick and either 32 or 30 ga. kanthal.
A small drill bit can be used to wrap the wire on to form the coil ( 1/10 of an inch is a good start point)

My first post since I registered about 5 minutes ago! I usually just post on reddit but all of you seem like a friendly bunch.

Anyway, Ripper Tripper's Tutorial for Protanks (Google 'mini protank micro coil rebuild') is how I learned to rebuild these heads with ease. His method makes amazing vapor and flavor. It has turned my mini 2's and protank 2's into atomizers that rival the KFL+ and other RBA's.

Since you are new to building coils, if you have an Android device, try the free app "Vaper's Toolbox". You can use it to figure out what gauge wire you should use, how many wraps etc. Let me know if you need help using it.

Oh for leg length on PT, EVOD, ARO type heads, use .3in for one leg, and .25 for the other.

Wow. Thanks. Never knew there was such a great app.

+1 I rebuild Protank II & III. Tight work but doable.

Vape shops are in the business of selling new stuff, a little at the time, so you will have to return. I can understand that, more returns, more sales and profits. I visit a few of the local shops and hang out a bit and I see it all the time. These guys all know the PT's coils are rebuildable, but I've never heard them mention it to anyone. They mainly just say the the poor soul needs to replace the coil and that they will be happy to sell them one for $3. Most all of them sell a 5 pack for like $12, but they never ask the customer if he would like 5 so he can just change them out and not have to return. I don't really see anything wrong with this, they are in business to make money, not to tell you how to save money. We, as consumers, are responsible for doing research and learning everything we can about our particular devices and how we can get the maximum performance out of them. Thank goodness for ECF!!!

Vaper's Toolbox is Awesome! I use it every time I build! I feel guilty for getting so much use out of an app without having to pay for it!

You know it's a good app because it was made by a member here that really knows his stuff! :p (Thanks ScottP for making Vaper's Toolbox!)

Hmmm, wonder if they got the idea for that app from my PV Web Apps :D

I have rebuilt coils in my kanger mini protank 2 the second I found out I could and to be honest I find it fun! I'm a hands on technical kind of person so spending $$ on prebuilts made no sence to me, especially once I figured the cost difference. Now if your going to rebuild do your research and make sure what your doing is within your batteries limits.

protanks are not rebuildable, at least not the protank 2

So I guess rebuilding the Mini Protank 2 as I did again last night is completely impossible. That microcoil that I clearly did not make sure is better than the stock coils I don't use.
