Malta is the home of John Dalli, the EU Commissioner for Health. Since he vigorously promotes the pharmaceutical industry's agenda and supports the denial of the right of smokers to purchase safer
tobacco products (which is in direct contradiction of Sweden's reduction of smoking prevalence by 40% and thus the maintenance of risk of death for an unnecessary 40% of EU smokers), there is a school of thought that alleges he may be directly responsible for tens of thousands of deaths of EU citizens every year, and therefore has probably taken the pharma shilling.
These are simply unfounded allegations, of course. No forensic accountancy examination of his financial affairs has ever taken place.
