OK I gotchya. I have never done that to my 510's, but I know the burnt nasty taste you talk of. I was dripping 2 broke in 510's. One was good @3.7V and the other would only make good vapor @6V. They finally started giving up the ghost. I put on ne attys and had a hard time with the burnt tast also. One is LR and the other a normal. I was dripping them... but I could only get a few puffs before the taste returned. I would flood them trying to get rid of it! It was a harsh, burn your throat stuff. Finally, I pulled the drip tips and put on a full cart w/ blue foam and it is working fine. If it starts to get an off taste, I top off the cart and all is good. Ithink this is because the wick is staying wet with the cartridge on it...

The blue fluval, UNPACKED..meaning you cut to EXACT size of cart, minding the grain pattern, and yes, it has grain patern, is a way to drip without removing the cart..like 12-15 drips a cart. If you question that, leave a blue fluval filled, full cart vertical, and see how long it takes to get a pool under your pv. But wick removed, one lil lingerer will insure your atty must be WELL soaked to NOT burn. If its sandwiched between the steel, and nickel mesh, youll never see it. (on a 510)

I have had numerous problems with standard polyfill. I highly recommend the pyramid tea bag mod, or just dripping.

Standard fill, and white fluval both work under two conditions..1- the grain pattern must run vertical in the cart, not cross it. 2- Must be lightly packed. Half the amount you see packed in fresh cart-fluffed up. It CAN make for easy out when removing cart, so watch for long straggler strands that catch on bridge. Teabag and fluval flood way too easy, and after numerous mouthfuls, I had to give another shot at white polyfil/fluval...and There be the secret to flood free vaping. But to each their own

I watched a video on youtube today and removed my wicks from my 510 attys...BUT if you do this, you will have to DRIP your liquid onto the atty and stop using the premade filler cartridges that hold the ejuice...

Not really, I am vaping an atomizer (threads removed) with cartridges and filler in them just fine. Draw is easier/smoother and vapor and flavor is much higher. If you suck too hard, you'll "load up" the atty though. Just go slow and all will be fine!

Thanks for all the replies guys, but for me it is not a burnt taste or any part of the ecig, its just the PV I can taste. I recognise it from smoke machines and the artificial smell vaporisers in theme park rides - it really makes me feel sick. Have yet to try VG, but still hoping it will cure the problem.

VG might be your salvation then I hope so :)
WHen I first started vaping I could smell the nicotine in everything and it put me off a bit but I got used to it :) It still smelled better than cigs lol
