Aye, I am frustrated with my genny

Well, first build was meh, burnt hits abound etc.

Maybe 10 or so builds later and it was finally getting close...but disaster struck and it got knocked over and alas she was hot-spotting' again.

I'll try again tomorrow, but my clearos are holding for now. Please tell me nirvana is on the horizon and that it's worth all this!

When you finally get the setup to exactly what you like, it is like night and day difference to the experience. We ALL have struggled to get the best setup, but it will come. Keep at it - the reward to too great! It is totally worth the effort!

Keep at it... it's worth it! What are you using for wick? coil? How many wraps? What kind of device? That info will really help us help you troubleshoot

I'm wrapping 32g Kanthal 3/2 on SS in an RSST, thinking about trying out the 30g. Running this on a VAMO and a Twist-style battery. First wick or two wasn't solid enough, most recent one is really starting to wick pretty well. It's broken in now, so I've built a bunch of coils on the same one. I'm guessing these wicks can last a long time right? I was more just posting about the frustration of it all though...

if it tastes burnt, hot spots maybe from coil being too loose.
maybe your s/s isn't oxidized well enough.
maybe you're trying to cook it too hot.
try turning it down a little.
not all juses taste good charred.

Kink in the coil or too much tension on the coil or the coil touching the wick in some spots and not others, or the wick not oxidized enough at the coil end, etc. etc.

The RSST doesn't eliminate hotspots...it just makes them less likely.

I'll try a little tighter wraps this time, should I try 4/3? I've heard 30g is more stable, maybe I'll try 4/5 wraps of 30g. Pretty sure that SS is oxidized nicely. 4.5 volts sounds too high?

I always have a hot leg (this time it's Neg., but it's usually on the Pos.)! No matter how much I pay attention to tension, how much fiddling/poking/prodding etc. Sigh.

a suggestion i was given, that i've found helpful, is to wrap your coils the other way. in other words, your wrap starts on the outside of the wick from the neg, try starting it from the inside.

note: coil on left is wrapped like yours. coil on right is wrapped as i stated above.

Thanks man. Had to re-read that a few times before I realized that you are not doing the S shape. Mine starts on the outside, but ends on the inside.

Success. I just kept messing with it, and even though it looked like that bottom leg was still a little warm, I filled it up and it seems to be working again. Still not "perfect" but this is at least as good as the last build. Thanks for all the help guys, I could never do this without you guys.

PS how in the he11 did anyone figure this out in the first place!? Thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster for all those pioneers who got us here.

One thing is for sure, you are going to want to bring your leads in from the other side of the screws. Meaning, yours are coming in frm the LEFT right now, at least the POS. is. Now, when you tighten that POS. screw you are feeding coil back to the wick, i.e. loosening it. Always fasten your leads so they come around from the left, so it tightens slightly.
