I'm new to electronic cigs, sort of. At least the new and improved versions.

About 2-3 years ago my mom ordered a starter kit (have no idea the model) that came with two 2-piece auto e-cigs (a short and a 100's length), 1 car charger, 1 wall charger, and 20 prefilled carts. She paid about $100 plus shipping.

She gave me the shorter one as I smoke that length while she smokes 100's. I used it for 1-2 weeks and had to give it up. My throat was terribly sore, the juice leaked in my mouth, and I felt that I was dragging really hard to get a decent throat hit. The first 2-5 hits were ok, but the rest didn't do anything for me.

That being said:
I'm looking for a manual e-cig to get started again. I've looked at the Joye 510, Joye eGo-t, and Joye eGo Mega, but I can't decide. Which e-cig is better for a good throat hit? I've read that PG base is the way to go. Should I look more towards the 801 or 808? Since shipping takes so long from other countries, what is a good US company that has reasonable prices and fast (preferably free) shipping? I'd like to try different flavors like fruits and desserts instead of tobacco flavor because I've never really liked the taste of smoking analogs. I never knew you could fill your own carts; is it easy to do? While I'm constantly at my computer, I'd like an e-cig that holds a good charge even if I'm constantly vaping while at the same time not being too huge or heavy (no screwdriver for me!).

Thanks for any replies! If you could, please post pros and cons for any recommended units. Thanks, again!

I am sure others will post some great equipment ideas. If you can, read the ECF library, I am sure there have been many changes since you last used an PV. If the juice caused you to have a reaction it could of been a PG based juice which gives some people problems. There is a VG based juice that might make it a better experience for you. I personally got a sore throat but it wasn't from the juice, it was because I did not drink enough water when I first started and now I know to keep my body hydrated. Good luck with your re-entry and welcome to the forums!!

Hello Mel and welcome to ECF.

I recommend you start with a standard Ego kit. No Tanks or Mega anything for now. You can always upgrade later. The Riva 510 is also a good kit to start with.

Here are a couple of US hardware vendors I have used and am very happy with.

Electronic Cigarette Supplies & Electronic Cigarette Refills for Name-Brand Electronic Cigarettes! E-Cigs from LiteCigUSA (Low shipping cost)

E-Liquid and Electronic Cigarette Shop - Category Listings (Low shipping and low prices)

For the e-liquid, take a look at FreedomSmokeUSA or for the fruit flavors, E Cigarette, E-liquid - Vapor Station has some good ones.

If you like the baked goods, Mrs T's Bakery gets good recommendations from a lot of folks, but I haven't tried them.

Yes, refilling your own is the way to go. Much cheaper than ordering prefilled. And better juice too.

There are many good models out there theses days and I'm sure you'll hear about a few.

Whatever model you get, just remember to get something with a LONG battery life which pretty much excludes a look-a-like model. Compatibility is a big plus too.

Since you are at a computer all day, I'd recommend a Passthrough.

And welcome back to Vaping. :)

start with something fairly standard and popular so you have lots of choices of things to try on it

The most popular 3-piece threading is 510, the most popular 2-piece threading is KR808D-1 (Vapor4Life, SmokelessImage)

Lots of prefilled cartos for KR808D-1
Few prefilled cartos for 510 but probably more style of blanks
Both need eliquid

Battery charge - 100mah is about 1 hour of moderate vapeing
510=180mah, 510 mega xl=280mah
KR808D-1 = 180/220 for the short battery and 280/320 for the standard battery (SmokelessImage claims the higher amount)

I recommend manual batteries so you can try the dripping method (with a KR808D-1 you would get a DSE901 standard resistance atty and drip tip). KR808D-1 is a real 3.7v slim mini so it vapes a bit hotter than 510 in general. 510's benefits are the manual batteries are totally sealed metal on the threaded end so they are super safe from damage by dripping or a leaking cartomizer, and 510 threading has more stuff to try.

Most people here use and recommend manual batteries - less likely to be damaged or killed by juice leaks, won't turn on accidentally from wind or vibration, make it easier to get a good hit since you can press the button in a couple of seconds before you start your drag

If you choose slim 510 I recommend Joye brand only! There is at least one clone around with reverse polarity (its chargers would fry a real 510 battery and vice versa - stay away from those). I also recommend normal 510 over 510T because the 510T charger can only be used to charge 510T batteries and can damage other batetries (it fried someone's Joye Ego battery). Buy a normal Joye 510 and you can always put a 510T tank atty on it if you want to try tanks.

Downside of slim ecigs - shorter battery life, and cannot use the hotter low resistance (LR) atomizers and cartomizers

Most popular fat battery models: Ego and Riva 510 (if interested in either I recommend only Joye or Janty brand for the Ego if you want a real Ego and not a clone. And I recommend Liberty-Flights.com for the Riva 510 since they have the latest model which is slightly higher voltage than Ego. Press the 20% off on front page to lower the shown prices, then shop).

Up from that are 3.7v mods and then variable voltage mods.

Wow, thanks for all of the responses!

I have to say, I'm still so confused. :( Let's pretend it's Christmas (or Hanukkah or another gift giving holiday :))...what would be on your shopping list to buy for an e-cig plus accessories for a friend (not necessarily a noob) or even yourself?

I have to be honest, I don't like the idea of upgrading, at least not often. I like to only spend money as needed, such as when a battery dies. I'd prefer to have a kit with several long lasting, manual batteries and a few atomizers. Blank carts are a plus, too. For my first order I'd like to buy everything in one place. Once I'm getting close to running out of liquid, I'd like to try other comps. I'm willing to spend a good dime on what will last for a while (even $100+).

I know it may sound like I know what I'm talking about, but I really don't know a whole lot about vaping. I figured out while reading through the forums over the last few days that I was dragging too hard, which I imagine is what caused such a severe sore throat. I don't know how to fill blank carts, but I'm sure I could find a YouTube video to show me how.

Thanks again for all of the responses and I look forward to hearing about what would be on your gift giving shopping list (even if it's a gift for yourself)! ;)

I'd buy a volt and about 4 batteries. Everyone, even veterans, have said that they just love it. I'd also buy about 4 wall warts and a USB hub so I could charge them all at once. The volt is a analog sized pv and one will last me about 3 hours of heavy vaping. I've tried other, bigger batteries, but sucking a tail pipe just wasn't comfortable for me. My son literally fell over laughing. (he's a teenager, so being supportive isn't in his vocabulary). Something about their carts is special that makes them different from the older style carts. Their customer service is outstanding, so I know I'd be getting service after the sale. Also, I'm not into fiddly gadget things, and the volt is simple to use, and simple to refill. Smokeless Image has good juices, but you can also experiment with others. It worked for me, so if I were buying for a friend, that's what I would get them.

IMHO I'd start with a joy ego or riva. You can buy a kit from Liberty Flights. The ego is $39.99.The riva is $29.99
Each has 2 batteries 2 atomizers,a charger and cartridges. It's all there for beginning the vaping journey. They also sell e-liquids by flavor arts. The total shipping is $2.99.Make sure to click on the 20% odd coupon at the top of their web page.I started with them and have been uber happy with their stuff. As many others I have moved onto mods but really I could vape a riva all day and be happy.

I'm not a big fan of eGo when it comes to throat hit.. they work.. they are consistent and reliable.. but they always feel underpowered to me. I like mods that have replaceable batteries in them these days. My next purchase is going to be a 510N, which is basically a tube of metal that fits in a 18650 size battery and apparently outputs the same as a Riva. The Riva is a decent battery that looks like an eGo but depending on where you get it from, the quality maybe questionable.. so while I love the Riva, I can't really recommend it because you may end up buying one of the low quality ones.

The other device I use daily is the 5v box mod.. it takes 2 x 14500 3.7v batteries and there is some electronics in it to reduce the output voltage to 5v. It is great for throat hit on many different 510 cartos and atties. Currently my favourite is the 5v box mod with Smoktech XL Dual Coil Cartomiser.

If you do a youtube search for "igetcha69" you will find a guy that has done a lot of device reviews and might help you to decide on which is right for you.

OK
I'd say ego. The riva is generally cheaper and ok for the most part but my sis has had some issues with the button popping out, and the cone that comes with the basic starter kit wouldn't fit with my cartomizers where as my ego cone was a little tight on one side but not so much as to make it unusable or even dificult to draw.

I'd get a basic ego starter kit and a box or 2 of boge 510 cartomizers. I prefere the low resistance cartos but that may depend on the flavors you'll be smoking. You might also pick up a drip tip, I don't care for them but a lot of people do and they're like 2 bucks.

litecigusa and libertyflights are both good sites depending on what you're buying.

Why pay $13 for a battery when you can get better, non-proprietary batteries for $4? Plus these $4 batteries hold a charge twice as long as the Volt batteries and can be recharged 2000 times instead of just 200 times. I have read good things about the Volt in comparison to other small auto battery models. From that stand point it is probably a good choice. But for half the price ($82 vs $45) there are better options for beginners.

I am so jumping on the e power bandwagon. I use a SB but the e power is my going out PV, as I don't ever want to lose my main PV. Even if the e power breaks on you. The switch I believe is like 10-13 bucks. When I have extra money I just buy another pretty cheap battery ( 4-7 bucks) to place into my 18650 rotation. I got my epower for 24.95 at hoosierecigsupply ( minus batteries and charger, as I already own), they are out of stock anyways. You just can't beat the value and the fix-ability of it. One battery lasts me most of the day and I vape like a crazy woman.
