I always order from BWB... I may have forgotten to put Canuck style in my order comments my package arrived today wit $23 cod charges... It was a $50 order they put the declared value at. $98... I've never had to pay a fee with them and I can't believe they misquoted the value of my order I'm so upset with them right now

All orders I have received outside of Canada with both DHL & UPS come with hefty "surprise" charges as of very recently. A $150 mod from Greece DHL collected $47 from me C.O.D., and UPS hit me up for $37 on $55 of DIY supplies. The federal Gov't recently implemented some tax changes, but I'm not current on what they are.

Until I can get a straight answer and solution to this, I can't order outside of Canada. I e-mailed several American vendors but they haven't responded to my inquiry. They obviously don't need our business. But then, I've got all I need for years to come now.

Maybe we need to make a thread which vendor shipments aren't subject to these exorbitant add-on charges.

With Ecigexpress.com these charges appear to be the norm now. They also do not respond to these type of inquiries. Until these DHL/UPS hold-up charges have been cleared up, I do not recommend doing biz with them.

yes, lets point them all out so they can eventually be listed for those same charges

Thanks, I needed that.
You got me. I fail to see the humor in this.

What solution do you have to prevent DHL/UPS suddenly hitting you up for $40-50 in surprise charges, otherwise they'll return it to the vendor, when you have already paid the vendor $20 or more for shipping?

Don't use the courier services. Stick to the postal services. Couriers will ALWAYS hit you for brokerage fee's. The postal service doesn't. Ever.

I ordered $240 worth of supplies from my US supplier for my small home-based business last week. We had an agreement (a conglomerate of us small businesses here in Canada) that they send via International Priority Mail. I checked this was the way it would be sent. I got charged by UPS last week for $140, and I've just got my credit card bill that shows I paid $40 shipping for a 14" x 14" x 14" box.

Apparently since US postal charges went up they prefer to use couriers in the US now as it's the same or cheaper. Also, the company I dealt with changed hands last year, so the email I have confirming the shipping practice to Canada is from someone who no longer owns the company.

It's so hard to be competitive here in Canada.

They back end load those fees.
UPS and FedEx are the worst that I have seen. The sender does not see the bills for brokerage fees and so, think they are getting great shipping rates.
I refuse to buy anything from any US company that will not ship USPS. Canada Post charges a flat $9.95.

If you want to see more stories, just Google "UPS brokerage fees"

There was no choice, since I never opt for UPS or DHL.

I always select the standard postal route which takes a little longer. And I don't mind. Whatever happened has nothing to do with selecting UPS or DHL, it just ended up on my plate like that, thus the heads up.

My husband works for UPS. When something ships via a courier across the border and into Canada, the courier essentially becomes your broker through customs. You pay a fee for that and there is no getting around it. I NEVER order something from outside of Canada, unless it can be mailed through the postal system. Sometimes broker fees and such will be more than the value of the item in the package.

Who stiffed you? UPS or USPS?
If the vendor ships via USPS (US Postal Service), the brokerage fee should be $9.95 if they charge it at all.
Who knows?

I never requested UPS to ship anything, that was done by Ecigexpress. It's almost $40 C.O.D., not $10.

I never asked anyone to send anything UPS. But they showed up C.O.D., and yes you are right, all said and done almost the amount of the value of goods.

But here is the problem: Next time I order something from the US without selecting UPS/DHL or any non-postal system courier, how can I be sure UPS doesn't show up with my package asking for a ransom?

I have e-mailed Ecigexpress about it, they never responded back, therefore they're off my list of vendors.
