Bad cough

I quit smoking 2 weeks ago - I used to smoke about 1.5 - 2 packs per day for 11 years. I have not had so much as one cigarette and I have been vaping regularly since. When I first quit I had a very loose deep cough for about a week, hacking up lots of gunk. The past week or so, I've had a very tight chest, dry cough, and the feeling that I have to keep clearing my throat.

Did a lot of you experience this after quiting smoking? I'm a little anxious just b/c I hope it is the not the vapor that is causing this.

It's probably just the clearing of your lungs, it's pretty common and can last up to a month. If you're concerned, you can try mouth hits by not inhaling to try and isolate the cause. You'll still absorb nicotine, maybe not quite as much, but you won't be taking the vapor into your lungs.

It could also be an issue with a particular flavor or maybe even the beginnings of a PG or VG intolerance. You can isolate the flavor easily, but you might try some VG and/or PG centric juices to be sure. Mt. Baker Vapor makes relatively inexpensive custom juice that you could use to try this possibility out. It'd cost you about $10 to try both mostly PG and mostly VG.

Good luck figuring it out!

Wouldn't hurt to give us an idea of the VG/PG ratio of your liquid, and maybe a brand name. I've found some brands get heavy-handed on using ethyl alchohol to cut the viscosity of the liquid. But, it took about six monthe before I noticed I wasn't coughing, wheezing, or getting winded so easily anymore. I think for a while, your body's going to be cleaning house from all the soot and tar you've put into it. Not a fun process.

i did not have any gunk come up from my lungs but the PG made me sick so i vape 100% VG.all is good. do your lungs hurt?

I had the opposite- can't vape high VG - it gave me a very heavy feeling in my chest.

But before I went out and bought a bunch of new eliquids, I'd give it a bit of time.

No my lungs do not hurt at all. In fact I excercize every day and I did when I smoked as well. I can now burn about an extra 100 calories in an hour than from when I was smoking. It's really just tightness in the chest, like when you have a cold, and the feeling that there is mucas stuck in my throat.

This is just anecdotal, based on nothing but myself, but I ran every day while I smoked and didn't seem to have a lot of 'gunk' to clean out, but many people do. Not that my lungs were the picture of health- I smoked many more years than you did. I experimented and found higher PG liquid works best for me and a few other runners have mentioned that as well- . But, like I said, purely anecdotal. You do have 11 years worth of toxins and crap your body is getting rid of, so I'd give it time.

Make sure to stay extra hydrated.

Yes; your lungs are changing.

Your tastebuds are going to change too.

What's your hardware?

It could be many things at this point.

As mentioned, your lungs are clearing out. This process is different for everyone, buy in general it's going to take longer than a couple of weeks.

The PG ratio of your liquids may be too high for you and it's irritating. That could explain both a cough and a scratchy throat.

Are you inhaling the same way as you smoked? A lot of people new to vaping can't do that, especially when going through the lung healing phase. That, and lung inhaling isn't necessary to get the nicotine out of vaping. See here: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/ecf-library/337017-inhalation-technique-e-cigarette.html

These liquids used in vaping are hygroscopic - they draw moisture out of you. You need to drink more fluids to compensate for that.

I use 80/20 pg/vg or 50/50 depending on where I get it from. One blend I have is minimal PG. I don't notice any difference from any particular liquid. I can vape the same liquid all day and feel clear. And then the next vape the same liquid and be completed congested, hacking away.

Hard to say what is going on.

I know that if I use e-Liquids that are High in PG, I get that Popcorn Bit caught in the Throat Cough.

It could be the e-Liquid. Or if could be you have a Touch of the Flu. I got hit last week and Today is the First Day I have felt 50% Normal.

This is my experience as well. I kept waiting for the "clean out cough" that everyone talks about, because I smoked heavily for many years. The opposite happened for me - I quit coughing at all. My morning cough just disappeared almost immediately, and hasn't returned. I started with Mt. Baker Vapor 80 pg/20vg juice because that was the default to order, and I've stuck with it. Seems to be good with my system so far.

I drink quite a bit of water normally, but I have heeded the advice to hydrate even more.
