My great-grandfather still had his real teeth when he died, which was pretty uncommon for someone his age that was born before 1920. He brushed his teeth once with salt, and a second time with baking soda... maybe in the other order, I'm not sure. He never used toothpaste.

I use toothpaste, but many have baking soda in them anyway, and those that don't use silica or diatoms, which have a very similar abrasive effect. You can overdo it with baking soda, and wear away the enamel. Baking soda is very abrasive. I wouldn't be too worried about it though.

I don't know how white his teeth were, just that he still had them. He died in his late 60s, maybe early 70s. I was about 4-5, so I don't really remember how white his teeth were. He smoked like a chimney, had most of his voicebox removed from cancer, and died because his lungs were so cruddy from smoking.

My grandmother told me the story about a thousand times, how when he was in the hospital, the nurse brought him a glass of water and told him to put his teeth in it, he told the nurse to go get him a pair of pliers. LOL

My mom brushes with baking soda sometimes, I think. She doesn't use toothpaste, she's afraid of the flouride.

I remember using salt and baking soda sometimes when I was a kid - it works.
