I caused the discolouration thing to my 8x VTC5's.
I know that I caused it because they were almost new and clean - treated the + and - ends liberally with deoxit gold so would have looked at them all close-up, the next day there was discolouration at the -ve ends on all the wrappers, where the liquid would have come in contact with the join between the batty case and the wrapper, extending unevenly between 1 to 2cm up the wrappers.
I speculate that where the discolouration appears (without human intervention) it could be caused by condensation of the moisture in the air with the batty repeatedly warming up/cooling down during use, with the moisture 'wicking' up under the wrapper.
