Hi Sally. The automatic batteries have a switch that is activated when you draw off the e-cig. The first generation ones used a wheel switch that activated when air pressure from drawing on it was created. The second generation auto batteries now employ a microphone type switch where sound activates it as you draw off it.

The manual battery simply employes a regular switch similar to a light switch that is activated by the user as they take a draw by pressing down on the button.

It is all a matter of preference as to which one to buy. I have found the manual ones last longer and if you drip smoke like I do, you do not have to worry about e-liqud actually getting in the battery like you would with an automatic.
