Battery 101 for Mods

I just recently purchased a sigelei Zmax v3. I have never used a mod before and I am very excited to get it and try it out! Because i am so new to mods, anyone care to give me a run down on how to handle the batteries? I will be getting 2 18650 batts and 2 18350 batts so I can run it in Shorty mode. Thanks!

How about a rundown on when to use protected vs unprotected batteries and the point of button vs flat tops.
