Trickling after the battery is fully charged and the battery is left in the charger for extensive period of time.

Which is why you get a good charger, like the PILA, which does NOT trickle charge (even though the instructions say it does, this has long been reported as a user manual printing error).

No good charger should be trickle charging. It's not even good for the batteries.

NiteCore never was at the top of the pile. They have miserable quality control

It was top of the pile........for fasttech buyers and people wanting to get 4 bays and a cheapie charger.;)

I agree w/you and wouldn't touch 'em myself, all you gotta do is google search, or search on vaping forums, to see how many problems there are.

Try to find multiple posts on PILAs blowing up. :) You won't. XTAR is good, too. Those are the only 2 i would own.

geez. I would have got the pila. I read a number of posts that xtar and piila were comparable or xtar was the better one. figures pila is better. it does not have a stupid lcd or anything. well, it is probably unlikely at least the xtar will explode like the nitecore did. that is the only very serious concern. which one is better overall is nice but explosions suck. if that was in the house it might have been a tragedy. you should have seen it. left 10 foot mark on the concrete floor. I understand anything can go wrong but nitecore and especially trustfire are just asking for it. I knew it would break but I did not think it would explode.

does xtar trickle charge? I thought the tc-cc-cv was three stages of charging. like it starts out pulsing, goes full 1a, then finishes at .25a. that was my understanding. should I bring it back and get the pila? I rode 3 hours each way to get it.

if a charger does not have a capacity meter and I have no other way of measuring it.....if I put a exhausted battery into the charger what will happen? this applies to my new vp4.

edit: it appears it analyzes the battery and will not attempt to charge one with no capacity or short circuit.
also, it states that it does not trickle charge. when charging is complete it shuts off.
seems pretty comparable to pila but no standoffs and 4 bays. those are plusses for me,
I just wanted to make sure if I unknowingly attempt to charge a bad battery I will not have another explosion.

edit: great. per the display it just charged a battery to 4.19. so much for dead on 4.20 every time. my luck.

were you watching the charge progression the whole time? if not, it could have charged the cell to 4.20, stopped, then the voltage of the battery might have went down to 4.19. xtar wont begin charging again until the voltage goes down delow 4.15 i believe.

regarding the exhausted battery, xtar will recover overly discharged batteries. the cell will likely never be as good as a cell thats never been deeply discharged, but it still recoveres them to a usable degree. i had a mishap and discharged a VTC3 down to 1.57 or there thereabouts. xtar vp1 recovered it by supplying a very low charge level (less than a quarter of an amp) until it got up closer to 2.5-3v, and even once it got above 3.2v i still kept it at a quarter of an amp as to baby the cell as much as possible. the cell is still functional to this day.

OK still confused.
What would be a better charger?
The Xtar VC4 or the Xtar VP4

The vc offers more function like a battery mah meter showing the age of the cell and how many Mah are in it, but goes no higher then .5 amp charge

The vp has same charging internals, !ess information but offers up to 1 amp charging which means they had to design a more robust circuit. Is capable of charging the newer 4.35v cells and has a car charger plug

I think the vp is killer i get 4.20 every time.

So really its whatever you want they are both good. Busardo really likes the vc

great. per the display it just charged a battery to 4.19. so much for dead on 4.20 every time

In my experience with it . i have found if not removed right away, through natural resting discharge will then hold the cells at 4.19 whenmeasured with my fluke its like 4.1978 something or so close it hurts.
