I've noticed that all mods take a particular lithium ion battery, such as 14500 and so forth. These all look like regular AA batteries, so why wouldn't nimh batteries work as long as they are the proper voltage?

Never mind. After some searching, I see only the chinese li-on batteries come with that high of a voltage. Back to the drawing board. I'm going to see if I can find a Japanese manufacturer. Their products are much more reliable.

Are there any mods that use batteries other than lithium ion?

There have been non-commerical mods that use flat packs and cell phone batts. An excellent example is Tinear's Sidewinder:

I think a good idea for an emergency mobile backup would be a battery pack with a cord that you could plug into your passthru. For example my BB passthru takes a 2.5mm plug from the wall wart. Easy enough to wire a cord with a 2.5mm plug to a battery pack. Maybe attach a belt loop and it would be pretty convenient.

haha, ...never mind... already available (for $4!) :)
