Li-Ion comes either protected or unprotected, if the description doesn't say your at the wrong vendor. IMR, CGR and NCR are still Li-Ion but use a different chemical make up, so instead of popping they will vent gas instead. The thread you posted is strictly user error, ALWAYS keep your batteries so that a direct short can't happen. Any battery will do this when direct shorted, Alkaline, NiMn, NiCad, Li-Ion, even lead core batteries. Direct short means any non-resistance connection between the positive and negative terminals of the battery, like change in a pants pocket or purse, or metal cartos in a glasses case.

I always get my batteries from RTD Vapor and chargers too, I've been using Panasonic NCR18650's for about a year now, charging them in a NiteCore I2 Intellicharger without any problems. When I carry a spare battery with me I keep it in a small case with a 10ml bottle of eliquid in a plastic bottle, no other metal objects are in it. An ego case works well also, it has pockets to keep everything separate. Just use a little common sense and you'll be fine, I've been using mods and these kind of batteries for three and a half years without any problems.

Many model PV's have protection circuitry built in and protected batteries are not needed and sometimes do not work well with these models. If the PV doesn't have protection, then get batteries that are protected. Considering the millions who vape without incident and for multiple years, it's really not much of an issue if one uses common sense.
