Sure... as long as it's a quality magnet with a good, conductive plating - although I wouldn't use any magnet for resistances below 0.3Ω. Use a rubber or other non-conductive washer to keep it on center in the tube - a sharp blow (like a drop) can cause the magnet to shift and dead short... without centering retention.

For those of us with similar issues does anyone know of anywhere that sells magnet spacers with the rubber/plastic outer part, like the magnet spacers in the 49.
Although you can pick them up cheaper if you shop around, I picked up some 1.5 X 8mm N52 grade magnets from Avid Vaper over a year ago... and they're still going strong.
5/16" X 3/4" X 1/16" rubber washers can be found in most any hardware store.
