I have some VTC5s with some small tears up near the positive side of the battery, also some VTC4s that are nicked pretty badly.

I had a mod last week, an XCube II, completely fry itself from the inside after putting in a pair of these VTC5s. Now the Box wont turn on and the smell of electrical circuitry burning was so strong I could smell it throughout my entire bedroom for 2-3 days! At first I thought for sure the box was defective. But these battery concerns entered my mind today after seeing a warning in the paperwork of the XCube to not use batteries with rips in the wrappers. Could the small rip on the batteries I used be the reason for the XCube burning up internally like that or am I being paranoid?

I have taken steps to fulfill the warranty on the XCube II however if it broke and Im at fault I obviously don't want anything I dont deserve. I havent printed a shipping label or taken it to the post office to send back as of yet cause I been really busy anyway.

In my batteries defense I have been using these Sony VTC4 and VTC5s in my Sigelei 150W and 30W mini for about 8 months without any problems. smok products could be more sensitive though. But let me know what you think if a battery has a small tear about 1 mm in size is it possible for the whole mod to complete burn itself out like that?

Thanks

The plastic wrap is not there just for looks. It provides a layer of electrical insulation to the cell body. Tears in the wrapper of a battery should be taken care of by replacing the wrap yourself (kits are available), or have a vape shop who provides this service do it for you.

I suspect the battery shorted itself out by coming into contact with something metalic and it vented in your mod, due to the imperfection of the wrapper you observed. The mod's protection circuitry may or may not have prevented the entire mod from exploding.

Well it sort of "exploded" internally. I don't think I should send it back for the warranty replacement if my lack of battery safety caused a short then.

Even though the Sigelei Mods I have never have reacted that way to torn wrappers on the batteries It feels like Im responsible in some capacity for the XCube frying itself.

But oh well you live and you learn, I need to stop learning the hard way with vaping but thats normally how it goes. This is the primary reason I do not use Mechs LOL

I know if I use a regulated Mod and keep it above 0.2 Ohm I should be good(and now I know to check the battery wrapper every time before inserting it in to the battery compartment for tears)
