From an email newsletter I received from my insurance carrier Blue Cross/Blue Shield:
__________
E-cigarettes: The Unknown Dangers
Originally marketed as a safe alternative to smoking traditional cigarettes, most e-cigarettes contain nicotine and other harmful chemicals. The long-term effects of e-cigarettes are still unknown.
What are electronic cigarettes?
You may have heard of e-cigarettes, e-pens, e-pipes or vaporizers. But what are they? How do they work? And, most importantly, are they safe? Officially known as Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS), they are battery-operated devices that contain a liquid cartridge. When heated, the liquid creates a vapor that is inhaled by the user. This is often called “vaping.” Originally marketed as a safe alternative to traditional cigarettes, consumers were given very little information, if any, about the ingredients of the liquid. Although e-cigarettes do not contain tar or produce tobacco smoke like traditional cigarettes, most do contain nicotine and other potentially harmful chemicals.
Learn more about e-cigarettes, new warnings and regulations regarding their use. Don’t leave your health up to chance. Talk with your doctor about finding a clear and safe path to a smoke-free you!
E-cigarette manufacturers are targeting youth the same way tobacco companies did in the past. The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recently classified e-cigarettes as tobacco products, and you must now be 18 years of age or older to purchase them.
__________
Personally, I'm all for more research and not marketing or selling to youth, but to blanket the entire industry with "targeting youth" and essentially condemning vaping because of "other potentially harmful chemicals"? What chemicals are these exactly? Is there viable research on this yet?
Virtually nothing about vaping being a safer alternative to smoking or a smoking cessation aid that actually works (as opposed to gum, patches, and drugs).
