Been over 2 years since I've modded, what's new?

I began molding back in late 2010, and quickly got good at it. With a basic understanding of soldering and ohms law, I dove head-first into modding as a newfound passion and hobby. With an inability to stop unless I've mastered a hobby, I quickly reverse-engineered ecigs and built box mods and VV mods. 2010 was an awesome year, going from a new ecig user to building them.

2011 started off great, with some new builds and trying to get them small (5v boosted mod in a single-battery plastic case was challenging but rewarding). But, after a family tragedy that May 2011, I put down the soldering iron and haven't picked it up a whole lot since then. I simply bought a VV ecig (Vamo), and just replaced it today with a V5. I modded a little but not much. Having a kid also changed how I spend my time, and my priorities changed. I still don't have a lot of free time to dedicate to modding, but over the past couple days I decided to take a peek into the modding world to see how things are going. I know I could Google until my eyes are bloodshot but I thought I'd just ask the awesome ECF modding community instead.

So, what's new? What's cool? What's hot? Any epic breakthroughs in construction or parts? Let me know :vapor:

I have been seeing these "DNA" boards here and there, and it looks like they're gaining popularity quickly (with rebuildable atty users I'm sure), and it looks as though KSD now has a couple of models that use this board. Where did this DNA board come from?

Edit- OMG, no way. The Darwin? Jeez I remember when they were still in prototype phase. It not only made it big, but they retired it in 2012? Wow. So these guys changed their focus to selling just the chips/boards instead of complete mods? I'm amazed. I thought the Darwin was going to continue to grow until it dominated, but not I see it's not the mod, but the "DNA" of the mod that has grown to enormous popularity. They really hit it off with this.

Things like the Kick, Hana Modz box, dual 18650 boxes, and large single batteries, have demenished the usefulness of building a mod. I think most of the modders have begun to do it more for mixing their own personality into their mods. It's more self expression than anything.

It's still kind of the same as 2010, but more techy. More user friendly devices with VV/VW chips. Devices which support low sub ohm coils. The hottest thing is the YiHi SX350 at the moment. Voltage turned into wattage. For that reliable performance.

I've messed with a Genesis-style atomizer (Cobra I believe) but I'm about to buy a different one, one with 3 posts instead of just one post and a weird screw that's on the bottom of the deck. At some point, someone figured out that twisting 2 Kanthal wires together greatly reduced the resistance of the wire, and this trend took hold. I'm willing to give it a shot (after I build another mechanical mod to accommodate the higher amps required). I have 30-amp switches from a while back that should do the trick. Pretty sure I'll need a heavier battery spring though.
