A connector is 3 pieces... outside collar with threads - silicone insulator - center post for positive connection. You can buy them assembled or not. When disassembled you can solder the wire to the center post beforehand to avoid melting the silicone insulator. They're pretty simple to assemble but can almost be as easy to rip the insulator as it is to melt it with an iron.
Might be a little hasty for a first mod but a lot can certainly be done there.
I have used assembled ones with success, I have also destroyed some. Maybe get both to be safe?

You might as well throw some 5v regulators in there too, try making some 2battery regulated boxes, the regulators with the 4th control pin can be used to protect the tact switches. This would not be a device to use LR on all the time, but it can be to simulate 6+ volts, or you can use SLB clone attys @ 3.4ohms to get a flavorful 4v-ish vape, a standard 510 will at 5v will perform very similar to LR@3.7v.
IC's and Regulators
You can use the 3x and 4x for many other things, like different chemistry batteries, or space for juice boxes and added circuitry etc etc etc.
Ya, didn't think about shipping, it would make sense to stock up then if you plan on building a lot. My only suggestion would be to get other size batteries too and boxes to fit them, so you're not stuck with 14500 only. Eventually you may desire a different battery for some reason. It really depends on how far into the hobby you want to get, I went mod crazy on all the junk around my home, then built my box mod to my specific needs once I had more experience with different configurations. I bought a 5 pack of 1xAA flashlights once because I thought I would want a bunch of them in different colors, now they're just sitting in the box untouched because I no longer want to vape 1x 14500, nor do I want to carry a colored flashlight around. Oh well, only $12 lost.

when you cut that spring make sure you bend it inwards so it do no damage to the batt contact. good luck and have fun! dont vape on your soldering iron by accident!

Check out the arrows in this pic. Those plastic retainers often cause problems.
