[...] I drop mine off at batteries plus for safe disposal, the last thing I'd want a battery to do is vent while in the garbage can or garbage truck when it's being crushed.

Not to mention how bad batteries are for the environment!

I keep my old batteries in a plastic container with a lid that screws on until I bring them over (please never use tin boxes for this!)

BE ESPECIALLY CAREFUL WITH BATTERIES THAT HAVE ADJACENT CONNECTORS:

Any decent charger stops the charge once the battery is full (some exceptions exist with NiMh battery chargers that use a timed charge, but that only poses a threat to battery lifetime, not fire or such.) AND has the correct input/output ratio. Mixing chargers, though is not a good idea because there are different types of lithium battery chemistries (lithium potassium is one example) and even lithium-ion have 2 different types (commonly referred as 3.6V and 3.7V. Close, but not close enough!)

This is really good info, thanks for it. I'm fairly uneducated when it comes to electricty/charging/ohm's law put to use, and so on.

So can some one tell me - when discussing chargers for 'sticks' (not for 18350 or the like batts), are you talking about the wall-warts, the USB->micro or mini cable, or is it the device you plug into (laptop or other)?
Thanks!

Thanks! I will probably start a thread dedicated to battery safety at some point if one does not already exist, but I have very little time to double-check all my facts at the moment. It's just better to err on the safe side. Not that it's extremely likely to have problems, but as one acquires more gear, losing track of what's what is more and more probable.

I'm curious myself as to what "sticks" refers to... eGo type batteries?

Yeah, I've a couple of friends that refer to them as 'stick batteries,' reason being their shape vs most mods, I always thought. It works for me!

But my question, really, is what is actually considered the charger, when not all units come with the AC (wall wart) plug? Are not all AC adapters equal, or is that a naive assumption? And what's considered the best practical unit to plug the USB end of the cord into? Thanks again for answering my questions!

When it comes to USB ports, all wall adapters are supposed to be the same since USB is an international standard. The worst that could happen is that you get a cheap or defective one that is not strong enough for your application and your battery will not fully charge or charge at all. I have one that came with a Blackberry and will not work with anything else than the Blackberry (one more reason I really hate them, but at least that was my boss' 600$). If the LED on your charger is not lighting up, then there are chances that your battery will slowly drain itself past the point where it will just die on you.

ALL OTHER AC WALL ADAPTERS ARE NOT THE SAME!!! There are not all different either but, if you don't know anything about electronics, it is wiser to stay on the safe side. If the charger or battery are getting hot beyond comfort to the touch, then something is wrong.

Amazon.com: Antec Quad Port USB Charging Station (UA4-25): MP3 Players & Accessories

(and one on my headboard and one by my reading chair:D)
Also for phones, Kindles, etc.

That I will, and I'll keep in mind to note the info on various AC adapters to embed that nugget of info in my long term memory. Thanks!

My pleasure!

I scotch tape a post it on the adapters so I can't go wrong, but I do have 15-20 different charger adapters for different types of batteries, flashlights, portable power supplies, phones, GPS, etc. It's in part a collection induced collection
