I can also vouch for rebuilding Protanks with cotton.
It was tricky for me at first, trying to find the right amount to roll into a wick.
There were times that i was impatient and tried pulling the cotton instead of threading it through..
and as you've guess it resulted in messing up the coil in the process. haha
I get great vapor production and flavor now that I've started rebuilding with 30 awg kanthal and cotton and I'm only currently using an ego twist!
As with certain liquids, i still do get a bit of leakage. But I have a feeling it's also because I bored out the airholes a bit.

Hey everyone,

Im fairly new to vaping but have been experimenting a lot with my protanks. I have never been fully satisfied with them until now. Like many of you, ive had a constant battle with either gurgling, dry hits, or muted flavor. Ive been rebuilding my own coils for about 2 weeks now and ive tried cotton and silica so far. I didnt like the cotton and using 2mm silica with varying amounts of flavor wick has caused issues for me. I am now taking one piece of 2mm silica wick and folding it over on itself, then doing a 4/5 wrap of 32g a1 kanthal over the wick folded on itself. This gives me two pieces of 2mm silica stacked on one another. This fills the slots in the head perfectly and works amazing as long as you remove the gasket that goes over the post. This is the best flavor and most vapor ive ever got from my protanks. I just thought i would share this incase it might help anyone else. I can take pictures if i didnt explain it well enough to understand.

pics would be awesome!

i have been struggling with my pro tank mini 2 and have now sorted it with cotton wool wicks and nano coils seems to work great.I followed the riptrippers vid on youtube works great now

Me too!! However I wasn't so successful haha I couldn't get mine to fire, tried 2 different coils. I think they kept shorting out, possibly from touching the sides. I dunno, it's really annoying though and I want it to work.

I'm going to try it again but maybe use 30g instead of 28 kanthal.

Wish me luck!!

**update** so I tried it again with 30g wire, it at least worked this time...firing up how it should, except I'm getting the gurgle and it's spitting (apparently no one taught this coil any manners! It's rude to spit! Hehe) any thoughts on fixing my issues??

on my first attempt with micro coils I had the same problem, tons of spitting. I added a flavor wick and it got better. still unsure what I did wrong, but the following attempts gave me much much better results, and no spitting at all. yet I still had a bit of gurgling sometimes.

on the recent builds I haven't seen any leaking, it's not perfect yet, nor as consistent as I would hope, but it's getting better each time.

what are you using for wicks? I am still experimenting with cotton, didn't like the first attempts. Got good results with silica, currently I am using 4x 1mm inside the coil and 2x 1mm as flavor wick. working well for me for now. most of my juice is 70pg/30vg. I try to avoid leaving any spaces near the shaft/silicone grommet, while not over packing the coil (hope this makes sense).

one thing I have been trying to pay attention to is to adjust my inhale depending on how the vape sounds. if it starts to sound gurgly I try to adjust the way I vape to fix the issue, seems to help a lot.

My opinion, take it for what its worth, is that the nano coil is not a good route to go for the protank coils (awesome for rba dragon coil builds though!).

The reasoning is that you HAVE to use flavor wicks when you do, the internal diameter of the nano coil is so small that a single wick will leave gaps between the top seal and cup, leading to leaking, gurgling, etc.

My experience with flavor wicks is that they mute the flavor, and reduce vapor production significantly, so I now aim for builds that wont need them. Like many here on the ecf, I started out using riptrippers method, over time I tinkered with different builds and realized quickly that building to not use flavor wicks makes a HUGE difference to the whole experience.

IIRC riptrippers uses a 20 gauge needle to wrap his coils. Instead of doing this, use a small screwdriver or something similar to wrap on, making a comparatively much bigger coil. I wrap on a 1.5ish mm screwdriver. 10 wraps with 28 gauge hits about 1.6 ohms. this leaves you enough space to place a full cotton wick, which fills the holes enough to not require any flavor wicks.

Back to the OP.

My experiences with silica in protanks have not been wonderful. That said, I'm gonna give this a shot, maybe it will revive my faith!

I can't do silica on my protanks anymore after turning to cotton. The only one I can still use silica is the PT 3. Maybe because there is so much juice hitting them it covers the silica taste. For me, it takes the cotton on my rebuilds some juice in period,( juice in instead of saying burn in.) before the cotton flavor goes away and it's either because I should boil them or it takes some time for the cotton to completely saturate which I'm leaning towards. The cotton wicks were ok right after making them and awesome the next day. The flavor has almost doubled and the th and vape cloud are about 25% better. This is a basic 5 winds on a 5/64 bit bringing a steady 2.4 to 2.5 ohm. Running on an Evod and MVP 2. I have some drip atos coming this week and can't wait to vape those.
