I've recently responded to several threads from new users who want to know the best thing to buy when starting out.

The responses usually fall into two main camps: 510 and KR808D-1. Both have their fans, so I thought it might be interesting to debate the merits of each.

If you feel that neither of these are ideal for the beginner, please tell us what might be a better alternative.

The main focus here is: what makes it better for the BEGINNER?

I voted "Other". I started with a 901 and IMHO (if I have to pick just one, and it's got to be a "stock" e-cig) the best "starter" e-cig is either the 901 or 510. Deciding between those 2 really depends upon the persons needs/wants. I originally went with the 901 for the flavor and even once I got a 510 I still find I prefer the 901.

Also, I wish more people would consider a "mod" as their first e-cig. An unsatisfactory first e-cig experience can lead some to give up too easy. Now days there are some inexpensive mods that, with adapters, will allow you to try different attys (and cartos) to find what works best for the user.

Just my $.01

Here and back
808 a 2 piece with little problem w/flooding or refill. Can vape on the go, Get manual batts and I suggest a PT for a heavy vape. Great starting point imo and nice pcc. I bought both 510 and 808 for starters, quickly left the 510 in the dust. Also, I quickly went on to a mod. If I had a chance to really talk to people I might advise to go with a mod from the beginning, I could have saved hundreds of $$$$.

indulgence for a starter. & extra atties & carts.
Why?
it does 401 510 901 801 808
at 3.7v starting instead of 3.2
401 has best flavor good vapor crappy carts.
510 is soso
901 decent flavor soso vapor.
801 good vapor decent flavor
808 depending gives good flavor & sometimes good vapor.

these are my personal experiences.
I have done better since owning the indulgence. & if was available when I first started I would have been better off.

Oh ya with the indulgence 1 battery will be like 3 stock batteries. maybe more.
for the price your doing better.
510 kit is 35shipped on up from states.
indulgence is 60 with atty normally depending who is selling it.
2 batteries 1 atty charger & 4 adapters.

Good points Kuya Dave... I would have to suggest a mod to someone who had the money to spend on it not knowing if they will enjoy vaping.

However, if they were afraid to drop more than the $35 on a starter kit, I would say flip a coin and get a 510 or a kr808d-1. A newbie if they continue vaping will probally end up with various stuff anyways..

prog if it was that way i would vote for 401 901 808 all should be same price about. 25-40 depending where they buy. 401 kits is generally 1 bat 1 atty but mine lasted a yr... thru washer dryer twice killed it 3rd day of 6volting it.
the 401 is a dripper more then a cart device tho. & is yummy

I would have to say a kr808 for a newbie.

Not everyone wants a mod. The size for one thing is just not for everyone. I personally do not want to carry and use something in public like that. It attracts attention that I am not looking for.
They also don't look right to me when dressed up to go somewhere.

I can see the benefits of them for home use , but I would not recommend it to newbie.

Just my opinion is all . Others will differ.

Just can't bring myself to recommend an e-cig with a cartomizer... until they cure that buring filler problem they're off my recommendation list.

And everytime I mention the MODs... Well, after they stop laughing it usually ends with somethig like "You expect me to suck on that?" (Cigarette smokers... go figure)

So, I guess it would be the 510.

I have recently bought 5 401 kits for new users. This was my first pv and I still use it a lot. For flavor it's great. Vapor is good, too. Most people that I introduce to e-cigs are clueless and the easier the better. Anything with a carto is definately not for a newbie. I have never had a burnt carto but I spent a long time on the 401 before trying them. I fitted them all with cart filler mods and offered to show them how to fill. I told them that if they like vaping and want to stick with it, there are other more powerful, longer lasting, and creative ideas out there but for now stick with what's easy and looks like a cig.
