I appreciate all the quick replies!

He definitely wants to quit, because he does worry about his health. However, he has never tried any smoking cessation devices, so his desire to quit has been fleeting at best.

You all have great stories about the power of the PV to replace cigarettes. Ultimately, I think it will be a matter of using the PV as much as possible around him, letting him try the various flavors, and most importantly, not pressuring him to drop the cigarettes cold-turkey.

In terms of a potential Christmas gift package, what would you guys recommend? I know there are infinite equipment/e-liquid combos, but what did you all start off on? The volt is probably a good place to start (I know he will NOT go for the larger PVs at first), but what about juices? From what I've read, sometimes a tobacco flavor is a bad place to start, because it will never quite match what they are used to. I'm sure it all comes down to personal preference, but there must be some juices with less of a "learning-curve", so to speak.

What do you think?

I got my sister the volt starter package for Christmas, for flavors I got her two packs of smooth sampler filters so that she can decide on her own the flavor she prefers. Didn't want her stuck with an entire bottle if she didn't like what I picked for her. I went middle road on the nicotine strength at 18mg, but she was a pack a day Marlboro Red smoker and I probably should have started her on 24mg but she says it is fine. I gave it to her early by the way.....I didn't want to wait another three weeks!

Thanks everyone for the replies! The amount of responses has been overwhelming, in a good way of course :). I like the idea of doing some sort of sampler pack, so he can find a flavor he likes on his own, without me forcing anything on him. I'm looking at the different Volt kits as well as the e-go. If he does convert full-time, I'm thinking a PCC is a must. Of course the Volt has a great PCC, does the e-go have a legit PCC (or is the battery sufficient on its own to last all day)?

Well, an eGo battery can last some vapers all day, some others may use a second one. There is a PCC for it, though. Here's one, for example: TORNADO PCC Case (Personal Charging Case)
(ignore the name Tornado, that's just what TW calls their re-branded ones, though they are still genuine Joye manufactured)
Usually PCCs are made for the regular 650mAh size batteries, but there may also be a version somewhere for the mega 1000mAh ones, I'm not sure as I haven't come across one myself

I usually just give the person an ego 650 battery 2 cartos and two different juices and a charger to try for a few days to see if they like it. no pressure at all. They usually want one for there own after a day or two.
The worst thing a person can tell me is you need to quit anything
good luck I have one full convert and 3 partial converts

My vote is also for the Volt. I love my Volt! I totally agree with the sampler pack idea. Smokeless Image has a good variety of sampler pack cartos. They have a strong sampler (a few different mint/menthols, cappuccino, and grape), a smooth sampler (tobbacos including RY4) and a sweet sampler (fruits/choco/vanilla).

IMHO pre-filled cartos are great for a newb, especially one that isn't sold on vaping yet. The Volt PCC kit already comes with one pack of cartos, so if you choose the strong sampler with the kit and then throw in the smooth sampler he'd have a pretty good variety of tobaccos, menthols, and a cappuccino and grape to see what he's 'into'.

He also doesn't really 'need' the PCC. You could always go with the starter kit and cartos and he could buy the pcc after if he feels it's necessary.

BTW: not sure if he'd prefer manual or auto batts? Choose one of each when assembling the kit in the shopping cart.

I cringe every time I see people say someone has to want to quit.

Electronic cigarettes are the only way ever invented for people that don't want to quit to actually quit accidentally.
There are hundreds of such stories here on this forum.

There is now even a study that shows the success of electronic cigarettes for people that didnt want to quit...
http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...l-quit-smoking-has-some-unlikely-critics.html

If someone says they are not interested because they don't want to quit, that is no reason to give up.
Pushing someone is never a good idea though, so maybe just give them something to play around with and see what happens.

an eGo 900mah can last a full day. 650mah will be dependant vapin habits. If its a Volt, a pcc is better as i'll wanna bet he'll be on it for as long as possible lol. Lunabella gave a very good suggestion in the sense of the sampler packs. he'll have a whole lot of flavors to play with untill he finds one he likes or even a few of them lol~

Welcome to ECF, Zachs23, all good advice above. You can't make him quit, give him a good example in yourself. Give him a gift. Don't pressure him.

One of the most important parts is mentoring. He could have the best device in the world, but without understanding that it is physically different than smoking, or how to best use the device, it will be for naught.

I haven't had much experience convincing someone to quit analogs but the biggest reason that I started switching was my non-smoker friends commenting ob the fact that they could always smell that I'd just smoked our wouldn't ride in my car because it smelled like smoke. It was a really big wake up call. Don't know if my experience will help but I hope it does.

It all depends on the person and their willingness to try new things. I've found that some people just want to try vaping to slow down or cut back on analogs. This never works. Several people I know say that the e-liquid kills their throat....really?! My theory is that if you keep switching back and forth between the two, you never grow accustomed to the new experience. I can recall that for the first 24-48 hours of me vaping for the first time, it did make my throat scratchy and I did cough a whole lot. That soon subsided, and from then on I enjoyed it with little to no side effects. I never went back to cigarettes from the start of my vaping journey though. So tell people to give it an honest shot for at least a week and don't smoke a cigarette no matter what and I think success rates can be significantly higher. Hope that helps :)

I think the Volt is the best gift you could give a smoker. If they give it half a shot they will (without even trying) cut down their cigarette intake. I got the Volt because of a YouTube video. I thought it looked cool. I was a 1.5 pack a day smoker. After a few days I was down to half a pack. A few days later I would just have one or two with morning coffee. Then I vaped at my Kitchen table instead of smoking in my cold garage and my coffee tasted that much better.

The Volt feels and looks like a cigarette. It's easy to use and it's doesn't look like a weed smoking device like most mods do to the non vaping public.

I didn't read through the whole thread, However I will give my experiences with converting.

I was WAY gung ho when I started to vape. Even before I started to vape I talked my Dad into vaping. lol I was sold on vaping when I found out about it. Had a horrible experience with a 7-11 $20 cheapy. Like no vapor after the first drag... bummer. But I know there were others out there that worked. I just did not know how many. When I finally got around to researching a good 2 days and watch you tube reviews and looked up different vendors I got my 510.

Got my husband vaping within a week. It took him different juices to switch completely however he has always wanted to quit smoking.

Got his Dad to try it, and he is going to buy a kit after the 1st.

Got our friend to try it. And he will still take pulls if he has no cigs, but hates it. Never got the hang of how to use it comfortably.

Talked to both of my smoking brothers a lot about it. The first one, is old fashion, Wants it too look and feel like a Nat Sherman mcg. I found one that does, and I will buy it for him after the holidays (I would have just gotten it for him however it comes from Japan.... so...). He did try my Dads, and said it felt just like smoking and would like to try it. My other brother is a total techie. Saw me using mine on Skype and loved the amount of vapor. He live with my dad and his cig looking one has not as much vapor. My Dad love it tho... so to each his own. BTW this brothers b-day falls on Christmas, SO I splurged and got him a 510 and 6 10ml juices. He knows I did and is more then happy to try. :)

All in all I say a gift with some encouraging words is worth a shot. I know both my brothers would not buy one on there own (partially because of start up cost). I would get them something familiar to hold like a 510. It is more likely to work by giving them one to try. I found that if I care enough about my friends and family give them info and a good starter pv. Best odds IMHO.
