I figured it would be best to optimize parameters as much as possible on one front, and then from there, do batch samples of the most promising solvent at different concentrations and types of acids. Unfortunately, the lack of quality equipment means the sample sizes are going to have to be large enough (ie. expensive) to be able to quantify the results.

1ml (5g tobacco) is just about workable as a minimum - if have narrow, tall containers (clear ones are best of course); test-tube like.

Yes, a multifactorial analysis will be great.

Wrt veg oils, I feel a more saturated one will work best (most inert); but one that is 'light'. That's why i went with the avocado of those i have.

Hi kinabaloo - my large tin of snuff arrived today - so I will be using that. How is your 'alchemy' coming along?

- I've also just bought one of those chunky 'pollen presses' from ebay - a bargain at £2.70 (they cost up to £40 elsewhere)!

Bricket on the right was the first go.

Second go worked even better in first stage, by including extra carbonate grains into the mash to maintain maximum concentration of the alkali. The dried result is on the left - almost white 'ash'.

Now to combine the powerful first stage with the use of vegetable oil ... :)

Did you make your second go as moist as the picture showed the first go was? If so, was it predominantly oil in the mix?

I added the alkaline first slowly until all the tobacco seemed slightly wet, then the oil. Then keep lightly mashing it. As the tobacco became darker and darker it also seemed to get drier so I added a bit more oil. After 1/2 hour, squeezed out.

It really did extract just about everything in there (the extra carbonate powder made a significant difference).

The problem I have, using fine powder, it that the mix is too runny to go though the press. :( My local store didn't have avocado oil - so I'm going to go with olive.

Olive should be fine.

Too runny ? Or too fine ? Maybe a cloth filter ?

~~~
Btw, was thinking that having some carbonate crystals in the mash probably helped beat up those tobacco flakes a bit more too.
I've added some carbonate powder to the mash (following your notes). My mix has the consistency of icing - which makes the garlic crusher pretty much useless. I tried the cloth yesterday with limited success... most of the liquid ended up on my hands! Maybe the cloth IN the garlic crusher???
Well, that's what I did. The liquid mostly comes out the top though ;)
I'll try to think of a way to handle 'icing' ...
