How's the homestead?
Not as quiet as I'd like. Still considerable contractor activity, both at our place, and my neighbor across the street is getting a new roof. View from my front door earlier today:

I gotta give the neighbor some credit though; he hired the same roofing company that did my roof not quite 2 years ago, which was the only tile roof in the neighborhood that came though completely unscathed.

Believe me when I say, if you lived through 2 of them within a 2yrs span, there is certainly no mistaking one for what it is... If you lived through 1, there would be no mistake!! I can personally say its nothing remotely close to a "Dust Devil" though!!

I can't like this at all. Been through a couple of those. There are no words that can convey the experience. Ever.

we had a dust devil here one year that caused some pretty heavy damage...difference is they tend to dissipate much faster, so they don't leave such a long trail of destruction.
What gets me, are the people who build in known tornado paths o_O Just....why?

So basically you are asking why anyone chose or chooses to build in the entire central planes of the United States? That sounds like something someone from California would ask!! What gets me is why anyone in their right mind would want to build a home on a cliff overlooking the ocean or the valley, or in the middle of the forest? That is mind boggling!! Then you see them on the 6 o-clock news crying their house fell off the cliff during an earthquake, mudslide, fire, or any combination of all of them!!

The first thing to understand about a tornado is there is no specific place, time, or pattern of destructive path it chooses. The 2 we had in an 18 mo. span, one came from the southwest, (just like its expected to by the so-called experts), and the other from the northwest, completely against all that has been learned about them... One at 4pm and the other at 9pm... The southwestern one missed the house by about 6 blocks while the Northwestern one missed by 2 blocks. I think personally, God just points down and says, "thats a good place for one", and it happens!!

I'll take a dust devil any day of the week. I used to see those weekly driving up 99 through Bakersfield in the summertime on my way to Fresno almost weekly...

well, there is certain areas, that are far more prone to tornadoes then others ,so lets build a trailer park there!
In your rush to be defensive, I think you misunderstood me. I never claimed dust devils were as bad as tornadoes. I said we had a couple (and one in particular) so large everyone THOUGHT they were tornadoes (the one including damage to property).

And yes, anyone who would build on a cliff in earthquake prone areas (like along the san andreas fault line) should have their head examined.

And as to which is worse, earthquakes or tornadoes......how many tornadoes do you get per year in your area? We have only had a couple quakes that caused any real damage beyond a fallen plate, and those were decades apart, last one was when I was a teen, so there's that :p

They have recorded 20 feet of snow in January.
The last highest record for January was around 3 feet :O
