For those that haven't seen my thread and met my little brother, this is what an insane Marine looks like.

And here's what a not so hardcore supply Marine looks like (Iraq '06(?))

If only there was a place....

I would have, but the clone is what he was considering due to budget constraints. I did not want to put that other place into a position they may not wish to be in.

What's that old saying about great minds? :p Thought about it myself but felt the same.

Good news, USMC! :)

Another member has come forward to make sure you get a brassy derringer to go with your new mod. :thumb:

They'll be shipping it out to me asap, so I can get it in the box with the mod.

I love this place. :D

I have been googling for hours to find a premade BF atty, and coming up with zip in my price range :p

I used to be all about supporting clones.....My opinion on the matter has changed, though my budget has not

So lately I have been doing all authentic cheaper gear.....but I had no idea how limited that category was in squonker stuff :p

This picture was taken at Al Taqqaudum (TQ) where I was in '04 and '06. I was mostly in Kuwait in '03 for the invasion. Went to Balad a couple times on convoys, but never stuck around long, just drop gear and go :D

not to turn this into a political thread, but one of the amazing things about being at Ballad, was coming into contact with a lot of local nationals, who, despite all of the outcry over us going there, were quite happy we were there, and thanked us often for being so.

I did my best to get'er grimy today to see what kind of patina I can get. Also need to work on finding attys other than the SS varieties I've stuck to so far...need something in copper and perhaps something in brass for future needs...;)

Awesome pichers, IM!!! A black delrin, or a polished aluminum button would go well with that setup. :thumb:

Progress report........

Well,...things didn't go as well as I hoped they would with the new tools...

I'll just take you through, step by step, the way I'm having to do the silver contacts...

First, I mark the rod in two places...

Op1RI0bl.jpg

Then I turn down the diameter, where the threads will be....

PaumFcBl.jpg

It'd be nice to be able to thread it at this point, but since the chuck I have in the tailstock won't accept something as big as the die I'm using,...I have to cut it loose.....

oi8irtol.jpg

that way, I can put the contact in the chuck that's in the tailstock.........

He2djCyl.jpg

and put the die in the chuck on the headstock.....

ncLsmgFl.jpg

Then,....I can finally start threadin'.....

64YC8Vkl.jpg

The thing is,...I can only start the threads.... I have to back it out, and flip the die around to finish 'em off. That way I can run the threads all the way up to the base of the contact...

GHskAqbl.jpg

This is where I thought I could save some time... I ordered a pair of die holders that'll fit in the chuck on the tailstock, and a new pair of dies to go in 'em....

3RewIrhl.jpg

I figured once I turned the rod down to the right diameter for the threads...

AYxTZcYl.jpg

I could just bring the tailstock in, and get to threadin'... Then, once the die bottoms out, I could just slap in the other die holder, that has the other die in it, that's already flipped around backwards,...and finish the threads off...

No frickin' bueno.....:(

Even though these new dies are adjustable, and I have them opened up as much as possible,...they don't wanna start on the rod until they chew on it for a minute, making the threads come out like this.....

8IFIX3Kl.jpg

and,...the threads are coming out undersized...

Long story short,... I've got some bugs to work out on that whole deal...

I've got a bigger chuck coming for the tailstock, so I can chuck onto the hex die I've been using, which works great for the threads, btw.... They just don't make a hex die holder, only round button die holders...

I'll still have to flip the die around, but it'll still be a little faster, since I can thread without having to first cut the part loose, and try and chuck onto the tiny little head of the contact...

He2djCyl.jpg

I'll get it figured out,...but in the meantime,...I have to do it old school.....

More pichers to follow........ :)

Since it's such a short thread (what, 3mm?) and what I assume is pretty soft material (may be wrong...), have you tried just hand threading them? No experience here with the same materials, just wondering if it would work even if it took an extra minute...

Why wouldn't you just use a m3 brass bolt? With a suitable center bore? Mill and shave the head as needed. Seems like a lot of aggravation to re-create an existing and readily available part.

Ahhhhhhhhh yes, true, but those are silver

Indeed! :D

These are solid silver. Better conductivity than even copper. If there are 8-32, solid siver screws readily available,...I'd sure like to know where...;)

BTW,...don't trust the tattoo suppliers,......they call a lot of their contact screws "silver" and "copper"... In my experience, they're always silver or copper PLATED brass.....
