Decided to jump on the 316L SS Wire bandwagon too Thanks @Rayonati Sloth for your great vid and links. Your feedback inspired me to give it a try
Ordered 24g and 26g but only received the 26g today so I tried a build with that for now.
So.... 26g 316l at 6/7 wrap over 2mm mandrel yielded .35 ohms. Center mount build on a Nuppin wicked with rayon
Starts cold at .35 ohms and goes to .5 ohms when firing. I gotta admit, I really like the quick ramp up and then smooths out. It produced a bit more denser and voluminous vapor compared to my .5 Kanthal build I have running on my brassy. It certainly feels different compared to Kanthal and I do like it a lot so far with this first build. I like them both so it will make a nice addition to my wire stash.
Waiting now on the 24g to come in so I can keep the same ohms but increase the coil mass by a few more wraps so I can get a little longer draw, then I think it will be perfect
It great to be here, I never would have even tried 316l since I was perfectly content with Kanthal, but with everybody's positive advice and Sloths great video I had to give it a shot too, and I'm glad I did

I noticed there was some chatter in another thread about the contact conversion that Corey so graciously helped me with for my Reo's and thought I'd post some feedback that I have found so far. I changed my builds out to .38Ω and .39Ω on each and the voltage drop on both dropped from .30v to .18v... The original drop going from standard Reo contacts to the subΩ contacts had a larger drop from .48v to .30v... Those were on freshly charged batteries as well and the atty's Ω'd out about the same... Long story short, money well spent... Thanks again Corey...

For those of you branching out into SS wire, dont be affraid to try other types then 316L. One of my favorites is the 430 (so far I've only found it in 28 gauge), and 304 in mechs.

Yeah I have to do that to my REO. I could sell a bunch to fellow/friend REO users but, there's only a few I'd trust without the heat spring. I'll do the negative sooner or later on mine...

Good point. If I remember correctly Rob refused to change the springs because of this particular point. He thought that for most people the improvement would be marginal compared to the risk.

It's OK -- looks like he used plenty of lube.
I hope you're solidly wrong on that brother. But alas you're likely correct. It's such a shame because IMHO as long as one knows what they're doing, mechanicals are as safe as regulated mods (I feel safer myself, many would say that's insane, but I don't trust chips or electronics - I do trust myself, though). But they can be so dangerous in the hands of someone who knows not what they're doing...

Setup is just not rigid enough on SS.....
Are you plunging with that end mill vs side cutting? If so, try supporting the hanging out end with a jack screw or blocks. That should help, or cut a set of soft jaws and reposition the mod in the middle of the vise.

I think tightening the gibs will go a long way towards making a more rigid setup. As you know, on these mini mills, you can't lock the head, and come down with the quill. The head actually rides up and down on the column, to give you your Z travel. The gibs are fairly snug now, but I can tighten 'em down a little more...
