Never again am I gonna do this by hand. I attempted a clapton coil last night WITHOUT A FLIPPIN POWER DRILL. I'm sitting there for two hours (my girl helped me, thank God for her being so patient and supportive) and I'm wrapping a 28g around a 24g while my girl is holding the other side and helping with flipping the wire over from one side to another. This was the first and last time I attempted this without a power drill. It literally took like 2 hours to do.

I only got one question - I know it's a lot of wire but the resistance is fairly low so why does it take 15 years to light up? It honestly takes like 5 seconds to get orange.

And I'm sorry for these stupid pictures coming up all rotated but I'm doing this off my phone and don't know how to tell that upload site to NOT rotate them.

Well, it's a lot of metal that you have to heat up, and since most of the current is flowing through the center-wire, it takes time for the heat to spread outward to the Clapton.

My guess its too much metal in there to heat up fast...I keep my builds simple for that very reason..a dual 26g parallel build at .27 ohms heats up instantly..that's 6 wraps on a 3mm bit.. (12 wraps of wire on both sides)..just sayin...

you need to use nichrome wire if you want it to heat up fast or send a bunch of watts through that guy

Watts was the first remedy for this that came to my mind. I'm like I need an apv with like 160 watts to probably get this to heat up faster. So much for dual. At least not right now. And nichrome is a good idea. Thanks dude.

I'm gonna stop by my folks house today and pick up a drill and get some 30g nichrome and wrap that around 26 and later around 28 kanthal to see how they perform.
Wait - it's ok to mix wire right?

Impressive work by hand! Wrapping coils the way our ancestors did...
my girl helped me, thank God for her being so patient and supportive
That's very cool. These days from my wife I just get, "Do we HAVE to have so many little bottles everywhere??" and "Will you please - for ONCE - STOP TALKING ABOUT COILS!!"

Haha... nope!
