Black build up inside mod tubes

I dont know what has caused this. I tried brushing it off with soap and water but its caked on there. Its black and really rough. Any help would gladly be appreciated.

If it was not like that when you got it it may be a battery outgased/vented. In which case i'd get a cotton rag or cloth wet it with soapy water and clean it with that. Alcohol may on a cloth may work. The other possibility is vapor backwash or juice got in there. Again clean it as with what i said earlier. I don't see a problem when I look at your pic. That looks like the inside of a cast or roughly turned tube.

Since essentially all the current runs through the inside of the conductor (in this case the tube itself) and not on the surface (skin effect only happens with high frequency voltage), it shouldn't be a problem for performance. As long as your batteries still fit, smoothly and easily, I can't see it's a problem.

Since it's so even, I think Steve's got it - manufacturing "marks"
