Hey first time poster long time reader lol got into rba not to long ago and I build my coil's to around 1.5ohm's 32g 3mm silica on a vamo v2 3.7v 7.5w juicing 80/20 VG/PG it's not the wick that get black and gunky it's the coil it start's tasting nasty or hard to draw and turning the juice darker and when I notice one of them happening then I clean the coil and all better but I know that shouldn't be happening so what is it? A hot spot that I don't see? or what?

I think it might be the high VG I'll try 50/50.

Perhaps I'm not understanding what you are saying? There is a normal buildup of burnt e-liquid that accumulates on the wick and coil at the point where they come into contact with one another. This can normally be removed by doing a dry burn and possibly scraping the site with a tiny brush (like what comes with a hair or beard trimmer) or soft tooth brush.

The coil normally gets some oxidation on it (a good thing) which appears black, but not to the point that their is a gunk buildup.

Yes I know that you have to clean them but it shouldn't be getting that bad in a day or 2.
And you are basing that statement on what?

You'll be going through possibly twice the amount of e-liquid on a rebuildable atty than you would on any other delivery device, just based on the size of the wick and coil. It stands to reason that the build up of gunk would be larger, and happen faster, than on other devices.

I think it might be the high VG I'll try 50/50.

First off "hot spots" are a problem with SS mesh... with silica, not so much.

I vape very high VG constantly (around 30/70 pg-vg) and yes, the coils get gunked up. This happens with thinner juice too. It's why there is even a market for replacement factory made heads for attys like the vivi and the protank. Darker and sweeter juices have a habit of gunking up coils faster than the lighter ones too.

An RBA/RDA has the advantage of being VERY easy to clean. I usually give mine a rinse under a slow stream of very hot tap water (don't try to blast the gunk off with water pressure!) first... this helps displace any remaining juice in the wicks AND it helps melt some of that "gunk". If I've already got a glass of cheap vodka out to bath some of my other tanks and attys I might give the coil and wick a end a quick swish in the vodka too. Get some dry paper towels, etc. and gently dry the whole atty... try to squeeze some of the remaining water out of the wicks with paper towels, if you can, but above all try NOT to disturb/break the coil.

Screw it back onto to your Vamo (I usually set mine to VV mode and start at a low voltage), and "pulse fire" it by pressing the fire button for a few seconds, releasing for a second, press it again, etc. The goal is to gradually dry the wicks under the coil with coil heat. Half a dozen pulses or so you can hold the fire button down for an extra second or two... you should start to see the coils begin to glow now. Have a toothpick, paper clip, jeweler's screwdriver handy... Pay attention to how the coils start to glow when you pulse it. If any of the coils are touching each other (or the posts) this can create a sort of "hot spot". Use your tool to try and *gently* spread the coils apart from each other and to make sure they aren't touching the posts either.

When they are glowing more or less evenly I give them a few final long, hot pulses to "dry burn" the coil. The purpose of this is to basically bake any remaining gunk into ash where it can be more easily removed. Blow hard on the coil to remove the ash while it's glowing... Stubborn buildup may need a little coaxing with your screwdriver, paper clip, etc. You'll never get it perfectly clean but with a little work you should at least see the wires exposed from under all the gunk and the wicks should be much cleaner too.

Put juice back on it and vape away. I clean my very frequently used Smok RDA like this probably once a week. A clean coil makes a WORLD of difference!

Dry burning shall set you free.

Tip the tank at a rough 45* angle, so as to have every last drop of juice sitting at the wick where it goes through the deck. Now, fire it up until your wick glows/the tank is clearly empty. Keep doing it until every last atom of vapor stops being produced.

Now...slight gunking on your coils, almost making them look fatter is a GOOD thing. Gunk should never be a problem on an RBA...no plastics in the way (there shouldn't be) to inhibit a good self-cleaning.
And as far as dismantling to clean? Well, I just take 2 screws off of the aga, and run water in it a bunch, then dry burn THAT out.

Lazy man's way.

I keep syringes around for mixing juice and filling my AGAs. I stumbled across Phil's tip on cleaning them and now that's how I do it :)

I just clean and or recoil mine once a week or every 3-5 day if it being used heavily it only take a few minutes

When I first started rebuilding them this is what I did too. Even the heads on my vivis and clearos! Then I discovered that with a lot of juices I kind of like the flavor of a "seasoned" wick, as long as the coil is relatively clean. I don't rebuild anything any more unless the wick is completely shot or I just want to try a new coil.

my coils gunk up and it throws the taste off what I usually do it just release the positive end and give it a dry burn with the stove, flame the SS until it's fires red put it back in and re-rap it like I said it only takes a few minutes but after I do that a few times the coil gets weak and will snap but I buy my wire by the spool so no a big deal

Thanks guys for all the good advice. I just didn't think that I should be cleaning my AGA-T+ everyday.

Depends on what resistance you're running at.

On my Patriot RDA (American Nimbus), I run pretty intense resistances, .4ohms usually... sometimes .5 dual coils. I will get gunky blacvk buildup within 20 minutes sometimes... it's no big deal.

Just dry burn, dry burn, dry burn, then rinse with water, dry burn, dry burn, dry burn.

I've gotten used to the fact that black coils are inevitable when running .4ohms w/ dual coils... I love how my juices tastes on crazy resistances... cloud chasin
