Hmmmm... I'm not sure how I'm reacting to this article. On the one hand, the usual anti suspects are quoted, with the same ole misinterpreted study results. Thumbs down. On the other, the author wraps up the article with

So if you are trying to kick the habit, e-cigarettes may help you, but if you don’t smoke, there’s no good reason to try electronically lighting up.

which is fairly reasonable and balanced. Thumbs up. (Unfortunately, this conclusion has very little to do with the rest of the article.)

Overall, I'm giving this thumbs horizontal.

Dr. Lawrason needs to hit up PubMed and do some research.

He says that nicotine reduces insulin levels. Smoking can do that, but...

Research says:

We found that the total glucose metabolism value was not modified with the administration of nicotine, either in the group with a family history of DM2 (3.9 +/- 1.0 vs. 3.5 +/- 0.7 mg/kg/min; p = 0.60) or in the group without such a family history (5.4 +/- 2.0 vs. 5.1 +/- 1.6 mg/kg/min; p = 0.34). The administration of placebo did not modify the insulin sensitivity in either group. We conclude that acute transdermal administration of nicotine did not modify insulin sensitivity in healthy individuals with or without a family history of DM2 in the first branch.
Acute effect of the transdermal administration of nicotine on insulin sensitivity in healthy individuals with and without a family history of type 2 diabetes mellitus in the first branch. Acute effect of the transdermal adm... [Metab Syndr Relat Disord. 2004] - PubMed - NCBI

He says nicotine causes reduction in the oxygen supply of vital organs and blood clots (which can be indications of a stoke). Smoking can do that but...

Research indicates:

"More recent Swedish studies and an NHANES study indicate minimal if any increased risk of CVD with ST." -- Neal Benowitz

(CVD = cardiovascular disease, ST = smokeless tobacco).

He also states that nicotine may cause certain cancers on its own. That may be true of smoking but...

Research says:

"The lack of increase in common cancers in lifelong ST users indicates that nicotine is not a general cancer promoter" Neal Benowitz
http://www.fda.gov/downloads/Drugs/NewsEvents/UCM232147.pdf

He says that nicotine can cause rapid heartbeat and increased blood pressure. Actually, that one is true; however....

The effect lasts about 20 minutes. The same can be said for exercise.
