Good starter ecigs are the 901, 401 and 510. Right now the 510 seems to be the flavour of the month but be aware that common complaints are poor battery life (about an hour but can be solved with a PCC) and a lack of flavour due to hotter atomizers. Even with those problems it is a very popular model.
I do agree with going with a manual switch unless you use the 401. The auto switches in the 401 are excellent and give very little problem. The 401 (particularly the EVO) is a rock solid workhorse but the only place I know of that carries them in Canada is a bit on the expensive side. The EVO is not available anymore from a Canadian supplier.
The 901 produces cooler vapour and a lot of flavour but less volume than a 510 and (in my experience, the 401). It is an all around excellent ecig with no issues and the atomizers are some of the most popular for people using mods.
My hands down favourite setup is a 5v mod (custom made ecig) using 801 atomizers. It provides the perfect mix of good flavour, massive vapour, and reliability. While not a good starter ecig due to the learning curve, it is something to keep in mind as a potential upgrade path.
All basic models are available in Canada but if you do decide to import from outside the country make sure that you separate the hardware and the liquid shipments. If your package contains liquid and is held by customs, the entire package will be blocked from entry.
