I decided to change out a Boge Cartomizer LR 2.2ohm onto the eVic.

I used the condom method to fill the cartomizer and then put it in a tank and filled the tank. I let it sit for about 10 minutes.

I then put it onto the eVic and tried to break it in at 3.5V. I then increased the power to 4.0 and 4.2 Volts. Nothing drastic as it is a lower resistance cartomizer.

The vape tasted a little burnt and then I noticed the filament glowing red from the drill holes. Scared me!

I lowered the power but it was still happening at 3.8Volts.

Is this cartomizer now burnt and binable? What have I done wrong and how do I avoid it?

The cartomizers I ordered are the XLs. Slightly longer than the ones that came with the 3ml tanks I bought. Should have bought the shorter versions!

that was the first attempt!

Again, tried another 3 Boge LRs, but this time I was more careful with the way I pre-filled the cartridge (30 drops) using condom method, and tried to break in from 3V in 0.2v increments. When I got to 4 - 4.2V, the same thing would happen.

Even when I let one sit for 12 hours, it too glowed red.

Any advice?

Was this just a bad batch or is my technique wrong?

Beats me. I've never heard of that happening. Do you have any other carto's or clearomizers you could test or use? Maybe Boge has a whole new problem now.

Those I tried so far are the Boge LR XLs.

I also have 5 x Boge SR XLs. Planning to try one of those next.

Really not liking the LRs.

I have heard that you get the occasional bad carto but 4 in a row is quite something else.

is there something wrong with my 'technique' perhaps?

Doesn't sound like you're doing anything wrong at all. I'm anxious to hear what's happening with this. Sorry you're having the problem.

Perhaps 30 drops isn't enough to fill an XL carto?

Maybe!

But what I did is I filled the sleeve with 30 drops and filled the cart until the juice came through and soaked the top.

I also looked at the drill holes and they were soaked. And for good measure, I dripped 3-4 drops at the top.

For the last attempt, I put 30 drops in the sleeve and then another 10 drops and absolutely drenched the carto.

I feel useless here but did you shake the carto down, like a thermometer, after filling, and blow the excess juice out before screwing it on? Probably has nothing to do with the problem.....

No truth be told I did not shake the carto down like a thermometer. Did not know you had to.

Did not blow the excess out either. But when I tanked it by putting the top part of the tank in about 3 drops of juice dripped from the bottom so I presume this was excess.

What resistance is the Evic reading the Carto as? I am running one right now in VW mode. eVic is reading 1.7ohms/3.54v/7.4watts
Going to 4.2 would put this one at 10.4watts a bit strong for a tiny carto wire.:glare:

Wow and I just toasted it in 2 vapes.
Hope you got your answer, now I need to replace this one.:(

Ultimately it comes down to: Did it work properly or not?

Coils do glow when heated. In most cases you don't see it because the coil is underneath/behind something blocking your view of the coil. You may have just happened on an odd set of circumstances where you can see the coil through the punched hole. Dunno - never considered looking for a glowing coil through a carto hole before.

LR devices are generally meant to be used at lower voltages. If you push the voltage too high any LR carto is gonna start tasting harsh because the coil is evaporating liquid faster than the filler can provide it. 4 volts plus? Yeah, that would make a LR carto go harsh in most cases. I seldom push my 3 ohm stuff even beyond 4 volts - after that things start going harsh.

It sounds like you are driving the things at too high a voltage, looking for something in that LR carto that isn't there for you. (Some people just don't like LR.)

I share your pain. it just may be a bad carto. I toasted 4 in a row which has me worried.

The fourth one I toasted is still on my eVic.

I have been running my eVic on VV mode and it reads:

4.1V/8.0W/2.2ohms

Still looking for the right answer.

Not sure exactly how the eVic works, but 4.1 volts on 2.2 ohms would give you 7.6 watts. (?)

That's not the case as the first thing I notice was the odd burned taste which was awful. It had that burnt filament taste to it which was dreadful. I then knew something was wrong.

I tried again and I could see the red glow.

The LR device I was using was 2.2ohms.

I also tried breaking them in by starting at 3V and working my way up.

The ideal voltage is 4-4.2 volts. This is the highest I got to which equates to 8W. Is that high?

Anyway, I am thinking of not buying the LRs again and just sticking to the SRs 3ohm for both eVic and ProVari.

Tripple digits half way to home
I'll try and chime in here. When I first started with a carto/tank, I burnt a few cartos. Once they get burnt, there is no help for em. Trash can time. I only use the 35mm boges. Some are pre-punched and others I punch myself. Another member (Baditude) got me started in the thermometer method for fillilng. The condom method never worked for me. I'll drip about 5-10 drops in the top and then shake it. Drip some drops till it looks full and then shake again. I keep doing this until the poly-fill won't hold any more. When it finally looks slushy on the top(and after my arms feel like their gonna fall off) I'll use a tank filling tool like the slap yo mamma.
Slap Yo' Mama Adapter : Big Daddy Vapor
That way I can fill the tank to the top and not worry about cutting the "O" rings. I don't have the link handy but if you do a search on youtube, there are a lot of really good video's on how to fill a carto.
I wish you the best of luck with this. When it's done right the carto/tanks give a fantastic vape. But that's just my :2c:

Thanks!

I used the condom method that everyone recommends.

I will look at the thermometer method and give it a try. Worth a try since I am toasting all my cartos at the moment and I don't know why...
