awesome detail work Capt. It's stuff like this that takes modding to the next level imho.
I really like how you left beefy chunks of alu on this side too. You sir, are on a roll!

Turbo, AWESOME idea for a thread!

It's not my design River, it's a celtic calligraphy typeface and I got it off Google images. I needed a typeface that wasn't too thin and which I liked of course and this was the best I came across :)

CaptSteve...waiting on some mats for my next build but while I wait, I'm really digging your inlaid Grands...mind if I build one?...feels like I'm stepping on some toes, (even though one could say "you" copied my Brass Grand) but just thought I'd ask just the same :p

I just don't want the patent cop getting all up in my $chit and have to avoid New York and a visit from your legal team

btw, if you have some time can you give me a "by the numbers" on your 9 step polishing system?...I have the buffer and wheels but what grade grit's/polishes are you using?

that R inlay looks like it'll be sweet. I've always wanted to do some sort of inlay somewhere but never could figure out what I actually wanted to be inlaid :) this thread is for sharing and inspiring others, I wouldn't worry too much about copying as that's what we're here for, to spark ideas.

here is one of my bottom feeders I built from scratch, this one is a 26650 and built from desert ironwood. the chip is an SX350 for up to 60 watts. I included a few internal build shots to see how it went together

sorry, I wasn't very clear. What I meant was the top and bottom portions of Al that you left on the Grand when you removed material for the inlay....as compared to the VV you modded, which is beautiful, but I'm liking this look even more.

Sorry my bad thought you meant the letter. Yep this one I decided to have a bit more contrast so I left the top and bottom wider

Do I mind? Heck it was you who inspired me to do this buddy so not only I don't mind but I seriously look forward to see what you come up with. Don't forget that I'm the noob here and if it wasn't for guys like you, Turbo, Ian and others I probably wouldn't have started modding stuff.

If you have the bench buffer (it's basically a bench grinder) and the wheels you're 50% there. The process is easy but of course varies on the amount of scratches you need to remove. If lets say you've got serious marks from sanding you'll need to first use a deburring wheel like this to even out the deep scratches and leave a nice surface to then buff.

After you have a nice even dull surface you'll need a buffing wheel like this

and some buffing compound like these

image.php

here is a chart of the grit of each color of the compounds. I use red to buff and white to polish but whatever you do don't mix the two on the same wheel.

die_compound_2.jpg

Once I deburr I put on one side of the grinder a buffing wheel for the green compound and a polishing wheel on the other for the white compound. Polishing wheels are like this

To finish with a truly mirror final finish polish with talk powder on the wheel

Try the process and you'll see youcan get amazing results.buddy

That's really good to know....I usually hand sand with a bowl of warm water to about 600 (I leave the 1200+ to NASA) then I buff with brown then to blue (on the same wheel, duh?) then finish with Mothers Mag polish (stuff is awesome)...

So, time to buy a polishing wheel and some white and a separate buff wheel for the blue (and blue only...the other one may as well be left contaminated with brown)

Ok Quigs I'll let you (and everyone else in fact ) in on a trade secret. If you guys want an absolutely amazing aluminum polish and I mean simply groundbreaking here it is.

Sharkhide

A good buddy of mine dspin (thanks Dave you're the best pal) put me on to this stuff and at first I was sceptical till I tried it. The stuff is truly magic, there's no words to describe it realy. Although it's described as an aluminum polish this stuff works on SS just as well. Forget wheels this stuff even works by hand although with a polishing wheel you get a true mirror finish

that looks like one serious lathe :) the delrin dt looks cool, wonder what you'll come up with over the whole weekend :)

I made a driptip from snakewood for my daily reo. pdib's gotten me to try my atties with no driptip's and one that I really like without a driptip is the chalice but I figured I'll ding up the edge of the chalice with no driptip and the edge is very thin and sharp with no driptip so I made it very minimal. it's almost like no tip but it gives me a much more teeth friendly wood edge and should offer some protection if/when the mod is dropped. I also made it as wide bore as possible to vape more like it vapes with no driptip. the wide bore does make a difference in taste and vape to me

I also machined a recess in the cap and made a brass airflow ring and drilled another hole opposite the original one to make it dual airflow. now a single central Z coil gets air from 2 sides, this really smooths out the vape in the chalice and reduces the throat hit, gives a sweeter smoother vape. this is my favorite atty so far and it's on my favorite mod so far which is why I use this thing every day everywhere

it's an ebony woodvil, I made the door for it in snakewood. love the way these woods feel. I sunk the dna20 originally into the side of the body and made a brass cap with stainless steel buttons, never got around to finishing the up down button pins in ss but probably will someday :) I've since updated it to a dna 40 though still no ss buttons :) the fire button is pretty tight on this one, I need to compress an oring to fire it so it never fires accidentally in my pocket, ever :) also I figured out an easy way to make the door lock in place securely. I recessed the magnet in the body and left the magnet in the door slightly protruding. now the door snaps into place and can't budge, only way to move it is lift the top edge of the door first, then it slides, otherwise it's locked into place. I use the heck out of this thing, prolly see's more use than all my other mods combined :)
