BRAND New Vaper

Hi guys! First I'd like to apologize if I get any terminology or spelling wrong. I've only recently started looking into vaping the last 3 days and I'm having trouble deciding on a good MOD for a cheap-decent price. I've read a bunch of articles around here on different models and stuff and a lot of the Newbie help guides.

Me and my wife are both looking at getting into vaping. We recently decided to quit smoking and are looking for an alternative to help us get over the urges. And by we, I mean she decided she wanted to quit so I have to quit (at least around her) to help her. Anyway, we picked up a couple of cigalikes from the gas station called Vuse and we had tried Blu before. Not very good at all, just doesn't give me nearly close enough to the hit I'm wanting, makes me feel like I'm just sucking on a metal stick in my mouth (something someone had mentioned was them being like placebos to simulate smoking and that seems to fit perfectly). Today I picked up an eGO called a Vapin Plus. Its an Atomizer I believe, but I don't have to do any dripping. Its got a tank that you just fill up with liquid and just vape away. I definitely like it a lot better than the cigalikes we had because it hits stronger and I can just fill up the tank and move on.

But I really want to go ahead and just step up to a MOD honestly. I've been doing a lot of looking around on this website and others, trying to do some research on my own but it is a little bit overwhelming. Having never looked at vaping before, there are just so many out there to choose from that I don't want to spend money on something that is junk. And I'm also worried about buying one if something new and awesome is supposed to release like tomorrow for the same price.

So far there are a few things I believe I want. An Atomizer that I can just fill up the tank and vape on it for a good while seems to be about the only real thing I know for sure I want. Coils and stuff sound a bit complicated, and I'm not sure if I want to use cartomizer because I like seeing the liquid. I've looked at the Nautilus BVCs but I'm not sure if $30 is a good price point for a tank. I'm also pretty sure that I want a VV/VW, although I have no idea how voltage or wattage the vape. I'm torn between a box or tube at the moment, I liked a few of the tubes I saw but again, I don't want to buy a junker for my first MOD. I've heard about sub-ohm atomizers a bit but again, not a clue how that affects the vape. I'm also not 100% sure how the charging works (internal battery, removable batteries, USB chargeable, etc). Is a Mini with 30w better than something larger with 20w (again, I don't understand how wattage works on vape). I'm also looking for a battery that can last me a full day. I'm in the military and can spend upwards of 12 hours out doing things nowhere near an electrical source for a recharge, and carrying an extra battery around sounds like a recipe for disaster if anything I'm working with were to slip and puncture it.

A few of the mods I've looked at are:

Nautilus BVC Tank (reposted here to pull out of that chunk of test)

iTaste MVP 20 (this and the iStick are closer to my price range, around 30-50$)
iTaste MVP 30w (saw some info on it but its still not out)
iStick 20w
iStick 30w (not out yet)
Cloupour Mini 30w
SVD 2.0 (huge and a bit more than I want to spend)

I am in no way limited to the ones above. I've been looking at a whole lot of different vapes, but these were the easiest to remember (plus I watched some review videos about them)

I won't list any more because I've forgotten a lot of the names of things I looked at. I'm just really overwhelmed by the amount of things out there and how complex the world of vaping actually is. There's a whole lot more to it than I thought there would be. I'm wanting to get some insight and advice so I can make an educated choice using knowledge of people who know what they're doing a lot more than my paltry few days of googling and lurking.

Sorry for the length of the email, I'm really interested in starting vaping and quitting smoking but I'm just overwhelmed and don't want to make a wrong choice and be out about 30-100$.

TL;DR

BRAND New Vaper, need help and recommendations on MOD choice.
Tried a few cigalikes. Currently using Vapin Plus eGO. Wanting to step up to a mod.
Which tank to get? Atomizer? Whats the normal price point? (Nautilus GTC = $30?)
Torn between Box or Tube, could use some recommendations of both.
Are they any "to die for" mods about to be released? Seen a few, not sure I want to wait that long to start.
How does VV/VW work? How do they affect the vape?
Sub-Ohm?
Batteries (internal, removable, rechargeable)? Battery Life?
How do Minis compare to larger models?
What can I expect to need to replace? Will mods eventually die out no matter what? Tanks? How long is average?
Price Range: around $50, willing to spend a little more if the product is just THAT good, but remember, I'm still completely new and don't want to ruin one with my ineptitude.

Thanks for reading guys. I'm really looking forward to seeing some of these responses.

P.S. After hitting Preview Post, I realized this post is freaking gigantic. Curse me and my need to over-explain to get my point across. My apologies again and doubly so for the length of this post.

You are about to get even more confused with the the myriad of responses incoming. It is one of the downfalls of getting into vaping. Don't get me wrong, it is worth the trouble and you will find something you like, but what I like and what you like will be two different things. The iStick 20 watt and the Nautilus BVC are definitely a good launching pad.

SVD 2.0 with the Nautiluses.

I looked at it for a while. $90 was a little more than I was wanting to spend but I gave it a look anyway. A review I watched for it made me not really want it (mixed with the price). I liked the tube look a bit (although I did see one yesterday that I loved but it was way too much), but it was measured at like 9 inches, and had a few flaws in it that, while they might not seem like a big deal, for close to 100 buck for the battery alone I was turned off.

This is the one I saw:

ProVari Hybrid Black Red (can check it out on the Provari website, I can't post links)

I believe that's it, saw someone using it in a review video, and he had a red juice that matched it that made it look pretty sick. $180 is a steep price point for me to buy as my first though. Too scared I'll do something stupid and ruin it.

Oh yeah I'm sure, but as thoroughly confused as I am already I'm hoping to be able to get some good information and make my decision. I spent a lot of time going back and forth between the iStick and the MVP. They both seem to have huge fanbases that love one and hate the other. I'm liking what I saw about the iStick 30 watt but its not launched yet (I believe it launches like Jan 15th). The main reason I like the two of them is the price point is right in my desired range for my first, and they both seem to get a lot of love. I'm just worried about overlooking something thats came out since then or about to be coming out.

That is a beast we all struggle with, and it will happen to you. This market is only a few years old and in the last 2, has really started to kick into high gear. Things get outdated in a matter of months, if not weeks. The best you can do is don't get things right when they come out, get something proven and well reviewed that likely has a version 2 or 3, meaning they have fixed issues with the original design, and very few widely used items haven't had a revision.

The important thing is finding what you like, and that doesn't mean it has to be the newest. Start small, or small'ish, and decide what is important to you. It could be you want flavor above anything else, or large airflow, or big clouds. Once you make those decisions, then really start digging in.

I will add, since you mentioned the ProVari. While it is a very well built APV and Provape has an excellent reputation, the menu system is awful IMO, unless you like scrolling through screen after screen to complete simple tasks, very tedious. That is an example of a device that was cutting edge in 2013 and has fallen behind the curve, screen-wise, by today's standards.

I advise that you get a mod that you can grow with. Don't be like me and get something cheap the from there I wanted something better. Then from there I wanted better taste from the juice. Get you a nice box mod and pair it with a subohm tank to me that's good enough to taste the juice and more then enough clouds to turn your alarm on GL.

Yeah I understand that. I didn't mean to come off sounding like I was just wanting to buy the newest thing out there. I just meant that if, say, I were to buy the iStick 20w today and the iStick 30w releases tomorrow and its better in every way it would suck. Especially if I were still waiting on the 20w to get here ;) .

Thats really unfortunate. Granted, I wasn't going to spend $200 on it, I just liked the color and design of the model.

There is so much out there that you can get confused. I started with the Nautilus tanks (still keep them for on the go or testing new liquids) but I love my Atlantis tanks now. I've been reading on the iStick 30 but I can't justify getting one over my iPV mini, I've been very pleased with it.

I'm curious about the difference between minis and regular. Is a 30 watt vape automatically better than other models that are 20 watt? And would a 30 watt mini be automatically worse than a normal 30 watt (I'm wondering what gets sacrificed in order to make a vape a "mini", if anything)?

Can you recommend some of them? I'm not sure how it all works, but what I gathered from looking around was that a box's resistance has to be low enough to go with a subohm tank right? An example would be like the MVP 20 says "Clearomizer Resistance: 1.0 Ohm (minimum)" and the Atlantis says "Available resistance: 0.5ohm (Sub-Ohm 20-30W)". So they wouldn't work together I'm assuming?

Smaller batteries generally, which means less vape time between charges.

I've been using the iStick 20W's never had any problems...the 30W iStick is available, I ordered one today from http://www.myvaporstore.com, they had every color available this morning.

Have an iTaste 20W also...I don't care for it, especially the button being on the wide side of the mod, rather than on the end, like the iStick or Vapor Shark 30W.

Like everyone said, its really up to the user...you'll definitely get battery life with the iStick 20W's.

Hi. I am going to give you my input. I am an old lady that smoked 2 packs a day for 46 years. I started vaping with less knowledge than you have now. I started with 2 Vision Spinners 1300mah and a couple of evods and a couple of 510 dripping attys. Got me off the cigarettes with 24mg eliquid. I used the Spinners for almost the first 6 months. One charge lasted me about 8 or so hours. I would charge one and vape the other one.

3 months in I got an MVP2. Serious battery life; about 1.5 days for a chain vaper. It is a box shape but it is one of the older and most reliable batteries out there. Built in battery so when it dies, throw it out. But it is only about $40. Smaller than a pack of cigarettes.

I have 3 Provari and I love them. But they are not your best first choice unless you know for sure that you will vape for a long time and be happy not going sub ohm. Provari will not do a sub ohm topper. It is worth the money if you find one used for around $100. They are the army tanks of vaping, they are rugged and reliable. You can send them in to Provape for repair if they ever need it. Most batteries when they break they are toast and you have to buy a new one.

The Nautilus is an excellent choice for a tank clearo. Many people love them. The heads that have to be changed are a little pricey but unless you go the build your own route (like a rda or kayfun type), you will be spending money on some type of head or coil anyways. Worth it for the quality.

Welcome to ECF and kudos to you for doing your research. Youtube videos are a great way to check out the gear. Remember it always looks easier on tv. At least until you get to practice with the gear.

I hope you and your wife find setups that you both like. Then come the hunt for a liquid you can vape all day (probably several). This will take time. Do not get discouraged. Keep posting here. Here is a link to a thread that has a lot of good info to get you started:

Yeah, I've seen them on there. But just looking around I found this site, vaportekusa, and it said "Expected release date from the manufacturer is 15th Jan 2015"

I am going to stick my foot in the water and say something that may be unpopular. I do not think a new vaper should be starting off with a mech and a sub ohm setup. Not until you learn about battery safety and how all this stuff works. You can do some harm to yourself and others around you, like a battery meltdown if you build a coil wrong and short something out.

Best to stick to regulated vv/vw devices for the beginning until you get to learn how all this works. Depending on your background that could be a couple weeks to a long time. I have 5 Russian 91% and 2 Kayfun Lite Plus that I have been building my own coils for and wicking with Koh Gen Doh cotton for about a year. It takes practice and you may find that you do not need all that extra wattage and sub ohm power to provide you a satisfying vape.

Just my 2 cents.

ETA - Regarding the Istick, many people really like it and the price is great. I read that it runs a little hot so people just adjust there vape to accommodate for the difference. What you are seeing is all the advance sales of the 30w device. Wait until you start reading threads on here about what people are thinking of them after they get them before you spend the money. No sense having to wait longer than you need to for a device no one has tried yet.

Hello I have to congratulate you on not smoking anymore . I smoked for a very long time and just could not put it down I finally quit for a month and a half and all I thought about was smoking constantly and dealing with the crazy urges for a smoke . so this is a good thing for you both. As you have probably discovered there are probably 300 e cigg companies out there , and probably another 150 that make e juice. the amount of gear is amazing something for everyone literally. So you are looking to get a bit more advanced with your set up thats really cool I have made so many mistakes in the gear I have bought I have wasted a super lot of money buying the wrong things . I want to let you in on my story of vaping . Itried it 2 years ago getting my gear from a place called Smokeless image .com they are great, the friendly service rocks, they are super prompt if you need any thing and answer there emails in ;like hours. there gear s good for beginner to moderate experience vapors the shipping is like 2 days super quick so many vape shops take like 3 days to get your order shipped after you place your order it sucks you wait a week for 2 day delivery. There are even shops out there with no phone number steer clear of them they are a ..... to reach when you need them. I always look for in a company a phone number, a way to email them in there contacts and a super silk website that actually works and has no typos this is usually what I look for in an internet company then i place my order . If you say to yourself something is wrong dont place your order i felt this and waited a week and a half to only be told sorry we dont have the stuff to send you what the (EDIT) and they did not even call to tell me . when you order something ask/email for a tracking number on the shipping and always print out your emailed receipts I've had companies take me for 30-125.00 its like they closed shop and ran away I lost the money the credit card company could not find them there is a lot of tricky (EDIT) in this business. Now gear I looked at wicked expensive stuff thinking its what I needed like 100 watt box mods and mods with great displays. Mechanical mods are something you should study on before you get into them there are a lot of types of batteries, a lot of charger types, its not just plug in and play these things can explode in your pocket or hand I've seen crazy pics of what they can do to a person good one to study on. Sub ohm vaping not a bigger thing you have a lot to understand to make it work right . I feel this is really only good for cloud chasing "making huge plumes of vapor" you need the low ohms to drive up the amps to make the coils hit instantly and hard for a duration of time. Dripping is the act of placing a few drops on a wick inside a coil to get moderate to crazy vapor and or it will get you the best flavor this is hobby land territory i just started to drip this week the flavor is over the top, the vapor is warm and sweet but you have to build all your own coils another area of investment . I bought a tool box , set of micro screwdrivers , needle nose players micro plyers , micro snipes , toe nail clipper , a multi function meter so I can read ohms, and another $35 in kanthal wire to build my set ups for dripping the coil part is easy and a lot fun to use something you built that you use . I have built 1-3 ohm coils my mod cant do sub ohm builds. Tanks there are probably dozens of them out there stick to the ones that get great ratings i have used cheap ones and you just dont get the flavor and they impart flavors onto your vape. plastic or glass when the juice freezes will the glass one crack? if you put a strong liquid like cinnamon in a plastic one will it fog and or split do you do easy work where glass is ok or do you do construction where a plastic tank would be better. they are not all created equal if its cheap guess what its cheap can you get replaceable coils for it how hard are they to get ? I bought an Aspire Nautilus is literally awesome the flavor is over the top, the air control is so cool is a bell glass shape is looks so cool the relacemet coils are not that expansive , I bought a Kanger pro tank 3 mini and it was a piece of (EDIT) bad vapor, spits , and the coils suck. you have a good battery ego/spinner there are a lot of better mini tanks out there if you would like to try some of the premium tanks. You stated you want to fill up and go all day thats cool its what I do. make sure you know the amount of fluid a tank will tae 1.5 ml tank lasts me an hour, 3 ml tank is a whole afternoon /moderate use I can get 8-10 hours out of it a 5 ml tank will last you literally a whole day its a lot of fluid like a half or more of a bottle of juice . Now Mods the big thing I messed up on so bad I bought an MVP 2.0 with an ego thread on it . this is great if you are stepping up from ego tanks or you just want to use small tanks in general . I had bigger visions I needed the 510 thread to match whats on the market . The day I was suppose to send it back i dropped it in the road and it got hit by a hour of traffic the thing is pulverized and guess what it work s like a charm still the MVP's are build like bracki sh_t houses its a stainless body wrapped around the battery and the chip nothing would have taken that much abuse and still work they are a super serious solid build. So I had to keep it. I thought what about the 510 connection I bought an adapter to make it work it looked stupid and was not at all what I wanted to be doing so I bought an MVP 20 watt at 35 bucks and its better than the mvp 2.0 the power is smoother, the feel of the box is better , the buttons work better, the display is brighter, and from 3.8 wats to 20 it can handle any tank out there as well as the right set up for dripping i have heard they are coming out with a 30 watt version but so far I just have not needed more than 16 watts . 30 wats is a waste unless you are gona put serious loads on it . 20 watts is plenty for my intermediate vapor needs i have talked to people who have the mvp 2.0 and they say its more than what they need . I picked up the 20 w and it will fill my needs and then some. thats the basics from me I have to say keep studying Oh the reviews on you tube you have to remember they get everything for free a company wants some press they send who ever free gear / e juice . I still to this day have not heard one of them shoot anything down , all the educes are great all the time . you have to remember most of these people are making a living at doing reviews on you tube they get paid for all they do so read between the lines and listen to them for the information you need everything cant be amazing out there well good luck and happy vaping remember nt to rush so much with gear sit on an idea for a day or two . Remi Love
